This happened a few days ago. The California Highway Patrol officer was shot and killed in the line of duty and the suspect is a 16 y/o gang member if I remember correctly. The DA is going to try him as an adult and are going for a capital case since this poor officer was assassinated basically.
IF he makes it to trial. The last cop-killer in LA was found two days later haggin' in his cell.
POMONA, Calif. (AP) A 16-year-old boy was charged Friday with murdering a California Highway Patrol officer in what authorities called a "random assassination" linked to street gang activity.
Valentino Mitchell Arenas was charged as an adult with one count of murder and the special circumstances of murder of a police officer, lying in wait and murder during a drive-by shooting.
...
"This was the ultimate hate crime -- the random assassination of a law enforcement officer solely based on the victim's status in the community and a uniform worn," Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said in a statement. "Those who commit these crimes and those who aid, abet and encourage the cowardly gang subculture should be condemned."
CHP Officer Thomas J. Steiner, 35, of Long Beach, wearing his uniform, was shot Wednesday in front of the Pomona South Courthouse where he was to testify in traffic cases.
The driver of a car stepped out from behind the wheel and opened fire, witnesses told police. The shooter then got back into the car and sped away.
