We've probably all seen this pic, but what gun is she holding?

Can't see too well, but it looks like it might be a cut down M1 carbine.

I found a larger image ina book I have, but its still hard to tell because its so dark. I the only thing I can see is that it has very round trigger guard....but that dosen't help much.

I know the SLA used sawed off M1's but what's that thing on top of the barrel?
The mag looks kinda long although I can't see it very well...I thought it might be an Uzi but the barrel is too long for that. It also looks like it has a pistol grip based on how she's holding her hand so if it's an M1 it's the M1A1 paratrooper version.

If it was an uzi wouldn't the mag insert into the handle? She looks to be holding a pistol grip behind the mag. Now that I look at it, the mag does look similar to a M1 carbine's.

Don't know if this helps, probably not. Brightened it up a little.

M-1 carbine seems like a reasonable choice.
This is Patty Hearst robbing a bank in 1974.
It was reported as a carbine and the M-1 was one of the most common semi-auto types available then . Not much else of military semi-autos around during that time that were easy to get.

Agree with AZRON. Looks like a cut down M1A1 like [WDW]Megaraptor suggested with some sort of scope and a extended magazine. What I don't understand is what they where thinking about by putting a scope on a gun like that?

That does help...the mag looks a little like a Thompson but there's no big stock...
It may be an M1A1 with a 30 round mag, some big thing clamped to the top of the barrel (it's not a scope, probably a big police-style flashlight), and the barrel and part of the wood foregrip grip sawed of (which is why the end doesn't taper like an M1 barrel should.

Reising .45?
Probably a very short M1 Carbine with a sniper scope on it.

I'm with this guy. Definitely looks more like a huge flashlight than a scope.

Looking at this photo, I don't think it is a Thompson or an M1 or M2 carbine.
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/6721/theordealofpattyhearstmq9.jpg
It has a pistol grip. Normal M1 and M2 carbines didn't have pistol grips. The M1A1 (paratrooper) carbine did, as well as a folding stock. I can't see any sign of a folding stock in the pictures, though they could have easily taken it off. Also, the magazine and stock aren't right for an M1 or M2 carbine. Could be a heavily modified carbine...
As for the Thompson, the rear stock could have easily been removed. The stock and reciever also don't look right. This gun looks more modern to be either of these two firearms.
Just my two cents. I don't know what firearm is shown.

Different gun in this pic. Certainly not a chopped M1/M2.

dude that picture is a remake of the old one. Anyway, the original is an m1 para with a scope.
