The 1/35th model topic inspired me to shoot some pics of my old 1/72 miniatures. Mind you these were games pieces that were picked up, dropped, stored in a bin, hurled in anger and in one notable case subjeted to a "beer barage" that forced both sides to declare a humanitarian truce.

So the paint is a little rough. I also wanted to try to shoot them like period shots. Wish I still had my old terrain as that is what finishes out a miniatures game. Anyway.

Yea post the HO miniatures. I may dig out some other stuff here tonight.

I meant some images to be blurry. Used the film grain effect in Pshop too. Not on all but some. Just kinda playing around. Would like to go get pics at a game convention sometime for fun.

Nice. My Dad has hundreds of Napoleonic and WW2 figures and tanks in this scale, but like the 1/35's I can't get to them or a camera to post photos. They're very good though.

Excellent suff.

Old trick I used.

I based my figs on a small metal base, then I put this magnetic stuff like you make car signs out of in the bottom of my cigar boxes.

Voila! When your figures are stored they stick to the bottom of the case so they don't rattle around.

Ian H

Nice trick! My Dad's are in cardboard boxes that used to hold paper in the Mid-80's, then he pinched them for his figures and vehicles. I've sort of got used to lifting a box and hearing this dull rattling sound of the figs falling over.
The Napoleonic ones are the worst, he glued 5 at a time to bits of cardboard to make simulating ranks easier, but of course this means that 5 times as many figures stand (or not ;) ) to get damaged if they fall over.

Hey Rantanplan

Did you ever complete the KSK troops? What did the final results look like?

I am trying to emulate several of these at the moment and am looking for further inspiration.

I used to have hundreds and hundreds of little WWII figures. I'd line the forces up on either side of the room. Then, each side would have a turn with marbles or rubber bands or something. It was AWESOME!

I had no idea these things are still around.

A question for you.

The bush hats you used on the KSK guys (and several others I've just noticed). Are these cut down from the ESCI Russian paratroopers?

Also, how did you get all the extra gear on the US M-16's/M-4's?

Thanks

TheKiwi

I will try to post a few of my modifications once I can location the photos.

Rantanplan

Yep, the KSK Heads are from the Esci Spetznuts. The others from Esci Vietnam War US Special Forces.

The M16/M4 stuff is scratch built.

OK, here's a couple of bits that I've done. The Khmer Rouge were for a role playing game (Millennium's End), while the KSK lot were inspired by Rantanplan's excellent moderns. Finally, the bloke on the horse is supposed to be US Special Forces in A-stan.

Yep, the heads are indeed from the ESCI Commandos. The Horse and the lower legs are from the Mongol Hords by Italeri. I have no idea how accurate the horse mounted SF is, as I couldn't find the photo, so just going by guesswork.

You have to put some Ponal Express (a glue for wood) on the brush and put it an the knees and elbows. Wait 5 minutes and repeat this 3 or 4 times.

P.S. Sorry for the late answer, I was a little busy the last weeks.

Cool stuff Rantanplan!

It's been a while since I did it, but I used to be really into modeling.

Very impressed by the conversions on the 1/72 Esci and Revell kits (If I'm not mistaken the GPMG gunner is from the Esci 'NATO forces' kit? ;) )

What sort of materials do you use for the scratchbuilt items and how do you fix them to the figures? Polyethylene isn't the easiest to work with.

I had a go at reworking a few 1/35 figures a while back. I've half done a Gulf war era SAS trooper with SA assault vest and 203, plus I've got two chechen war era russian troops partially modified from a Dragon NVA infantry kit.

For the trooper I used the one-piece mold of trunk/head/legs from the Tamyia 'British stretcher party' and put some spare arms on. I used Milliput to make the SA vest and create his SAS smock and leg pockets and also his NI gloves and wooly hat. Just needs painting now.

Did a similar thing with the Russians. Used milliput to make arm and leg pockets, extended the jacket and made it look like a winter-weight one. Added a 'fur' collar and a wooly hat. Also made a russian chest rig out of the 'Chicom' pattern one that is molded on. Again, still needs to be finished.

If I get my hands on a digital camera, I'll post some pics.

I've taken brass wire and flattened the end with a hammer and small anvil, then filed the point on. It's not as much work as it sounds. Some people will just paint the wire without touching it. I'm not familiar with exactly how the spears you want should look, but that ought to work for most, I would think.

Not a bad idea, how do you do the points and butt spikes though?

I only use mine for Wargaming and Role Playing Gaming, so strict accuracy isn't a big deal for me. Just the idea of a spear is good enough for most situations.

On a slightly different note, I will post some pictures of of some 'Private Contractor's' in Iraq that I've been working on (after Xmas when I get my home computer back).

These are metal figures from Arsenal Miniatures (http://www.arsenalminiatures.com/). Very nice, although the M249s aren't quite right. The Bradleys are Dragon Armor, and the buildings are from Miniature Building Authority (http://www.miniaturebuildingauthority.com/). Although Arsenal's website appears to be under construction, you can still see the figures via Google's cache and going here (http://arsenalminiatures.com/ipw-web/ecommerce/os/catalog/default.php?cPath=21&PHPSESSID=e4f7e9cc01766209efef7f23891bed32).

Yeah, I started out with Games Workshop stuff back in the day. I still have Blood Bowl and Necromunda. I'm too free a spirit for GW, though, and my interests are more historical anymore.

Damn, I could realy need one of this paint pallets.
Bought mine from these guys: http://www.wargamescenics.com/. It's great, but really made for smaller paints. They have an extension to increase the height between layers for my "craft" style paints. I might switch to something like this (http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displayProductPage?productNum=cp0094&channelid=), which runs about US $40.00.

Just saw these, expensive, but nice (http://www.tole-expressions.com/bruceswoodworks/index.html). Too much for me, though.

But your chair looks awful uncomfortable. Any backache?
No, never really gave it much thought. I tend to lean forward with my arms braced against the table or table edge for stability when I paint, anyway, so all that really matter much is the seat height.

I currently use Revell colors. Will change it to Tamyia when I got some money (think they are better).
I used a basic color for the Abrams and the Bradly, "washed" it with black, rust and brown and finishing the whole with "dry brushing" with the basic color, white and a litle rust. (As said before, all colors were from Revell)

There are a lot of different paints, and odds are you can find somebody who does a wonderful job with each one. All I can say is read instructional sites and try the different styles and techniques, and find what works for you. I use acrylic craft paints. Not the highest quality, but they are cheap and clean easily with water (no smelly chemicals).

Did you use brushes for all the stages, or an airbrush? I have a very hard time getting smooth surfaces with a brush, but don't really want the hassle of an airbrush.

Is Airfix still in existence?

Had a lot of 1.72 Airfix moulded plastic soldiers when I was a kid.
They had these boxes with 14-30 figures in them.

WW-1 British infantry
WW-1 German infantry
WW-1 French infantry

WW-2 British infantry
WW-2 German infantry
WW-2 Italian infantry
British 8th army infantry
German Afrika korps infantry ...etc.

Mostly paid for by money earned from doing rounds with my bike delivering evening newspapers in the neighbourhood

Also had some 1.32 scale figures by Airfix.

Don't know where the 1.72 figures went, but my nephnews and nieces used to play around with the 1.32's when visiting the "grannies". Used to find small figures hidden everywhere around the house from that .

Also remember a friend of mine had the Airfix Waterloo set which I thought was fabolous.

Use an old toothbrush, use it as some kind of "airbrush of the poor", it's quite dirty and you better cover your desk abd particular parts of the figure.
Apply some paint (relatively diluted to make small drops) on the brush, and then rub it in the direction of the soldiers, use a brush per color. Depending on the paint and distance, the paint drops will be bigger or smaller and the pattern will be more or less spread.
I think it's pretty hard to apply to figures, as I used this techniques to make vehicles look more "muddy" (with gloss added in the mix) than with an airbrush but it could do, thinking about some drops patterns I obtained.
Try it out on the mirror in the bathroom with water and toothpaste :D

edit : rub the toothbrush itself in the direction of the figures, don't rub them with the toothbrush :)

Painting Flecktarn is a little bit tricky. First I paint the uniform parts with a greenish Sand colour. Then I paint some bigger areas with green. finally I paint with a thin brush little brown and black dots (more brown than black) over the green and remaining sand areas. The paints have to be very thinned.

Here are some Fallschirmjäger I painted 3 or 4 years ago. Note: I used Revell Enamel paints and not Vallejo Acrylic paints as usual. I prefer Acrylics, but imo the Enamel paints are better for commoflage. (compare them to the IDZ (http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13258&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=80) guys I posted some months ago. They were painted with Acrylics)

Hey Rantanplan

How about you do a couple of 'lectures' on how you paint various types of cammo. I'd like to hear how you do the British DPM, and the US MARPAT etc.

Rantanplan
08-09-2005, 05:40 PM
US Woodland: First khakibrown base color. Then paint little V or clover leave shaped stains on it (green, brown and black).

DPM: First Sand Base color. Then paint little shreds on it (green, brown and black).

The stains and shreds should overlap each other

Marpat: ?

Desert Marpat: Khaki base color. Then make a mix of Khaki and brown, put a little bit of the paint on the brush and press gently the peak of the dry brush on the on the base color. Put more brown in the mix and repeat the procedure.

OK then, here are some more that I have been working on.

First up we have a British Royal Marine Commando on exercises in Norway.

http://www.millenniumsend.net/downloads/images/Commando01.jpg

Next we have an experiment where I was trying to do the Britsh DPM, but it ended up looking more like the Aussie DPM. Sigh.

http://www.millenniumsend.net/downloads/images/Experiment01.jpg

Then we have a member of a militia in the former Yugoslavia. I like the tracksuit pants and the balaclava. I'm slowly working on some more militia from this part of the world, this lot wearing some of the blue tiger stripes that certain groups liked so much.

http://www.millenniumsend.net/downloads/images/Militia01.jpg

Next up we have a KSK machinegunner with a MG3 in Afghanistan, converted from a mixture of ESCI US Vietnam elites, Russian spetznaz and Modern NATO types. I'm a lot happier with the cammo on this one than on my older KSK conversions.

http://www.millenniumsend.net/downloads/images/NewKSK01.jpg

Now we have a North Korean.

http://www.millenniumsend.net/downloads/images/NorthKorea01.jpg

This was my inspiration for this guy

http://img39.echo.cx/img39/8521/post1310840085780qc.jpg

A pair of UK armed Police officers. The sad events of 7 July inspired this pair.

http://www.millenniumsend.net/downloads/images/UKPolice01.jpg

http://www.millenniumsend.net/downloads/images/UKPolice02.jpg

Finally, we have some US Special Forces in Iraq. These have been converted from Caesars excellent SAS range.

TheKiwi

Yeah, the caps aren't correct, but they were the best I had on hand at the time.

I've just finish a set of 40 African rebels, and I'm working on some Russian special forces in Chechnya, and once those are done, that's it for the next six months. Everything gets packed away until my house renovations are finished. I'll post a few more shots once I'm done.

Nice work on those Imperial Guard Cadians. Have you seen and/or collected the new Elysian Guardsman? Also, ever thought of painting digital camo on your imperial troops? I myself am in the middle of painting a modern themed imperial guard army using the new Elysian models.

Rantanplan

The Elysians are neat troops. But they are to expensive and I don't like Resin miniatures. So I wont collect them. Maybe when they eill be made in plastic some day.

Death.
11-05-2005, 03:30 PM
Wow, all that stuff is pretty neat.

I too have alot of WH40k stuff that I used to play with, a large Eldar army and some Dark Angel space marines, my paint jobs aren't the best..shaky hands, and the eldar's look no where near the quality of my marines since I painted those way long ago.

I'll try to get some pics if I can find em

TheKiwi
11-06-2005, 03:55 PM
Well I packed up all my painting gear on the weekend, and it's staying that way until my house renovations are completed. But before I finished, I took some more photo's of the last stuff I finished.

So here we have some examples of 40 African militia I painted up. I created a random chart for each of them for their cammo (different upper, lower, helmet and boot schemes) to show the random chaotic character of African warfare.

Figured i'd revive this thread :)

Me and some mates started collecting and playing Warhammer Fantasy ages back, but we sort of lost interest for a while. But the other day a couple of my mates stopped by and asked if i wanted to play (didn't work out, seems like most of our armys were at a mates house, who of course wasn't home).

I've got a regiment of Bretonian Men-At-Arms that i've been working on for a while, the new figures are much more fun than the 2-3 variations they used to have. I might post some pics, but my primitive painting is in no way remotly as good as the stuff i've seen here, so i'm not sure if i'd stand the ridicule :)

You might want to reduce the amount of silver used on the weapons.

G'day KingsCarbine (name sounds familiar ? )

they look pretty good to me ,these look like the Italeri re-moulds , not the old Esci green plastic chaps i have , do you think the old Esci figures will be just as easy to convert being made of different plastic ?.
May i ask did you pin the pieces together ?
I hope my conversions turn out half as good , our group has recently decided to wargame Vietnam using a skirmish set of rules , having already painted and based a company each of NVA and American for FOW , they will now be put away and replaced with new single based figures .
I look forward to chopping up a few American bodies now

I moved too last year so I know your pain. Some greek Hoplites still miss their arms and heads.

Btw: Some close-ups take with better light.

Good stuff, Rantanplan. Insanely good detail considering how damn small these guys are.

So I finally unpacked most of my stuff (much like Seventy-Sixer, I've been building a house). Most of it survived intact although some took damage. I have a friend visiting from NY who is into modelling in a big way (mostly 1/35th armour), so I set up a bunch of them on the windowsill of my hobby room, and took a shot. Mixture of moderns and WWII mostly, with a few western and Roman era thrown in.

Even though I should be working on other stuff, here is my most recent-est work. It was inspired by something that Rantanplan did a couple of months back. A contractor in Iraq. Body and backpack are Esci 8th Army, head is Esci NATO Aircrew, pistol and rifle are from ESCI US Vietnam and scope is from ESCI Russian Speztnaz.

I finally got around to taking and editing some photos of stuff I've done in the last six months, so I'll upload a few of them at a time, starting with the finished contractor in Iraq.

Thanks. Not up to Rantanplan's standards, but very few of us are. (Blatant suck-up).

I'm very pleased with this one. Possibly the best I have ever done.

That's pretty high speed.

I used to do this stuff as well when I was a little younger, not that I'm old enough to say that. Headaches from concentrating so hard on stuff.

I just got some 54mm stuff today, its a little bigger then the scale in this thread but rather then post my own. I will contribute to this one.

I didn't paint the metal figures they came painted.
The Highlanders however I will be painting myself.

No one does modern Aussies ... yet. I'm hopefull that Ceasar will do some at one point. If they do, the first thing I'll do with them is make them Kiwi's though.

Johnny_H, 54mm's are cool. You can put so much more detail than on 1/72nd.

I did think about cutting some 1/72nd AUG's out of plastic card or similar. I agther you can also buy them in photo-etched brass from some places although the prices look sky-high.

I am HATING! these Tamiya Acrylic paints, they are far too thin even after being stirred properly. I might have to bin these and get Games Workshop paints at least they coat evenly.

I found Tamiya acrylics work great on plastic and I always felt they had better matt colors than most enamel-based paints...

I'm having a dreadful time with them, they are far too thin. So far the Olive drab and the Black are going to require several coats just to cover the primer evenly.

Are you painting on plastic or metal? Maybe they changed the formula since I last did any modelling... that was about 20 years ago. Sheesh. Thinking about starting again though... )

I have been using Tamiya acrylics for most of my recent painting. Some of the colours are rather piss-poor and I've had to revert to Humbrol. Especially the matt flesh, the matt white and the bright yellow I used for the Swedes, which have a tendency to flake and dry unevenly.

The main thing the Tamiyas have going for them is the screw tops, but I think I'll revert to Humbrol for my next paint pots.

On a similar paint related topic, anybody tried to paint ACU yet. I've done some tests but I'm not happy with any of the results so far.

well Tamiya so far out of three containers has been diluted piss.
Wont cover evenly its almost like the primer is still wet but its not its plenty dry. It was a waste of $40 on Tamiya paint because If I have to use x4 coats every time I paint a pouch, bag, webbing these things are going to look like a retard dipped them upside down in paint.

Very dissatisfied with my purchase.
*** Update I just spoke to the guy that owns the store that sold the paint, Will be bringing it in to have a look see just incase I might not be stirring it long enough or correctly ***

OK, here is the good news. Throw away the Tamiya's. Set them on fire if it makes you feel better. Now take your crap looking Highlanders and place them in a plastic shoping bag. Grab a can of oven cleaner and fill the bag of soldiers with oven cleaner. Tie the bag shut tight and leave for 24 hours. Next day, wash with warm water and the paint will fall off leaving the Highlanders looking good as new.

Now you can resume with GW or Humbrol or any other paints you like.

Edit: I store my Tamiya's upside down which seems to improve the quality of what is on the lid for painting.

OK, heres few more. This time its Orion's Chechen rebels/terrorists/freedom fighters/whatever you want to call them (oh and a converted ESCI Russian Spetznaz - I like the addidas tracksuit pants look).

After touch up's and gloss coating, I am really satisfied with it. It is my first attempt at painting a military miniature and my first attempt at painting any plastic miniature in over a decade.

That's very nice work. Myself, I prefer a matt finish to a gloss one but I think that comes down to personal choice. (I used to do glossy finish but now it just looks to me like its protecting the crap job I did. I still have hundreds of craply done older figure awaiting the oven cleaner treatment).
