BAGHDAD, Iraq - An explosion leveled part of a building as American troops searched it for suspected production of "chemical munitions," a U.S. general said. Two soldier were killed and five wounded in the blast, and a cheering mob of Iraqis looted their wrecked Humvees, taking away weapons and equipment.
Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt did not say what sort of chemical munitions were believed to be produced at the site.
"Chemical munitions could mean any number of things," including smoke grenades, he said. After the blast, there was no sign in the area of precautions against chemicals.
Asked about reports that the raid team included members of the Iraq (news - web sites) Survey Group — the U.S. team searching for weapons of mass destruction in the country — Kimmitt would say only, "The inspection was by a number of coalition forces."
He said the owner and associates of the site were "suspected of supplying chemical agents" to Iraqi insurgents, but did not elaborate.
Witnesses said the blast went off just after troops broke into a storefront in the one-story building in the northern Baghdad district of Waziriya. Kimmitt did not comment on the cause of the explosion.
The blast leveled the front of the building and wrecked four Humvees parked in front. Afterward, a U.S. soldier was seen being taken away in a stretcher, her chest and face severely burned. Witnesses reported other U.S. casualties being rushed away in ambulances as U.S. troops closed off the area.
Several Iraqis were pulled out of the wreckage, including a woman who wept as she was carried over a man's shoulder to safety.
Afterward, dozens of cheering teenagers started to smash the ambandoned Humvees. One child climbed on a hood of one of the vehicles and beat it with a stick. Iraqis stripped the vehicles of equipment, one waving a heavy machine gun, another waving a U.S. helmet. One man sported military headphones.
A group dragged away one of the already burned-out Humvees, doused it with fuel and set it ablaze again.

An explosion ripped through a chemical storehouse, setting four U.S. military vehicles ablaze and inflicting American and Iraqi casualties, witnesses said. Troops appeared to have included members of the Iraq Survey Group (ISG) hunting for weapons of mass destruction, according to identification cards found at the scene. *******/str

;)
Those "SF" guys look like Rangers. Can anyone confirm that?
Is there any way I could get High-res versions of those pics?

I cannot understand why after the bombing, if the US forces had the time and the men to "secure the site" as claimed in the captions, and evacuated the casualties, did they not tow away the vehicles or searched the areas more thoroughly? That could prevent the Iraqis from looting and recovering the sat photos, the helmet and other stuff for their "trophies."

epc, it would be great if they were able to police the site of all equipment...but well they're not Police  And its hard not to miss anything, besides most of the things the Iraqis are looting is unusable or insignificant, aside from the recon photos. And well, im sure its easy to miss a piece of paper amidst the chaos. I'm not disagreeing with you that if they remove all equipment they would remove a morale victory for the Iraqis, but it is simply impractical.

They remove all the gear and equipment that isn't destroyed. If you notice the SAW that one dude is holding...There is no trigger mechanism. On the SAW, knock out two pins and the whole handle and trigger assembly comes right off, making it useless. Plus it looks destroyed anyway. Now, why would they tow the Hummers out? They are destroyed. I don't think they can call AAA over there.
someone above said can anyone confirm the SF - b/c they look like rangers
I'd have to say SF for the most part, but they could've had Rangers with them. I could be wrong though.
IMO, Rangers have been very secretive in this war. More so than Special Operations.

I was waiting for old Khalid to show up with some burning Humvee Pics since he's been pretty quiet lately. But then again, as one member pointed out, he's Iraqui so obviously he knows right where to be when stuff blows up in Iraq. I know how that is 'cause I'm from Florida and when stuff blows up down here in Florida I see it in my magic ball so I can run to the scene and take pics of it right away. Even if it's a half hour - forty minutes away on roads that are in much better shape (like 95) it's no problem I get pictures before the smoke clears.

"...so that no HMMWV gets left behind."
Okay, let them keep getting bushwacked.
Let the west see the burning hulks, get even more demoralized thinking, "Cripes! Looks like these Iraqi's are all kicking our asses!"
See the Iraqi's get more emboldened by their "success" and use more IED's to get more "world kodak moments".
Then the USA will withdraw after immense pressure at home and a limp president (Kerry) will say "we now have peace with honor."
Bin Laden in his lair, will say "You see? Burn some of their vehicles kill a few of their soldiers and these weak willed cowards will run. EVERY TIME!"
So yes, please with @#$%&^ sugar on top, TOW THE @#$%%^ vehicle!

Did these guys show up with the Troops and then just slip into the Mosque upstairs because, you know it looked so inviting? can't pass up a tour of the Mosque and who'd want to follow a bunch of troops into a building when there's some danger I guess?
Maybe they were at the Hotel and rushed to the scene after the explosion?

Looks kinda far actually maybe not.
Well if they didn't arrive with the Troops then opt for the Mosque Tour they were probably already in the Mosque. Would've been a nice place to Ambush some troops - there's a nice view from the roof of the Mosque.
Well who knew those troops would be there today? Coincidence probably. I'm sure that chemical supply buildings all over town are wired to explode - couldn't be an inside job - nah. And you know how Mosques always attract hordes of photographers.

The pics were taken from a building on the 'bottom' of the ref imagery. If you look at the first (close up) image, you'll see a four story building north (note the north arrow on the image) of the place with all the cars parked in front of it. In the first yahoo image you'll see shadows pointing towards the camera (hence shooting the image to the south) - and you'll also see a two or three story building across the street (west). Oh and the trees help too.
The mosque is marked due to the LOAC (law of armed conflict) issues with said structures. Best have the fellas on the ground know where the things they "can't" shoot at than not know.

Thanks wyrm! I stand corrected that is the place in the lower left. That doesn't make it any less mysterious - just not as interesting as the Mosque. If I were with three photographers on the scene I'd know we'd all have to go up there to see who could make the best roof pic - there really aren't too many opportunities to get that kind of competition going and you know how we competitive we photographers are.

SOF don't carry 'special' ID cards. Mil ID cards are the same. Less is better, the less you have to ID what unit you are in, the better. My desert BDU's don't have anything other than my rank & name (not even a specialty badge).
Also - why would a high speed unit take the time to back the HUMVEE's up to the target?

Does the Kid (he's obviously doing this as part of a class trip or something) on the left think that piece of muffler is like a trophy? The guy on the right is holding up his wife's pocket rocket - he's probably looking for a little lube.
I've seen that guy in the middle before!

So killer, you volunteering then?
driving a slow bullet magnet to pick up a burnt out shell of a vehicle surrounded by not so friendly locals at a site which could have many more devices planted solely for you?
Getting in my Howard Summers Tow truck, right now!
I thought you knew! ;)
Oh, and Humvees don't need no help they are already slow "bullet magnets" with all the armor slowing them down.
Solution: PUT MORE ARMOR (BFV's and M1's) in IRAQ!

Couple of things to say here. One is that whoever it was here that said that the building that blew up was the building that these guys were going to check out and the fact it was a chemical facility or whatever it said is very suspicious in my view. Thanks for pointing that out whomever credit is due.
Another is those pics of the captured Humvees, aint no way one of those raghead mother f*#$ers is gonna dance on my vehicle. I would rather die than let those bastards get thier hands on my ride.

um okay. See when it is destroyed and doesn't really work - you can have it.
So long as you destroy it - who gives a ****? I mean really? If my vehicle was disabled and especially unarmored - I would un-ass the thing in a heart beat. That is why you have incendiary grenades. **** it - it is a truck, once it's disabled it is nothing but a Huge weight (and a 15-6 but that is another story). I would not loose a troop over an assed-up truck.
but hey what do I know.

I was thinking of setting up self destruct device inside the vehicles, if those ragheads dare to dance on the vehicles..... BOOM! Send them all to the moon flying.

5 pounds of C4 detonated next to the offending hmmwv should solve the dancing problem.

I like! :D
Nobody is saying that troops should fight and die for disabled vehicles.
If the convoy gets hit by an IED or RPG, and the troops are being sprayed with machinegun and rifle fire, by all means, get out of the kill zone.
In this Baghdad raid, the troops stuck around long enough for Iraqi ambulances, fire trucks and police to show up and evacuate the casualties, then simply left the scene. The whole time there was no shots, no followed-up attacks. True, the wrecked humvees and disabled weapons have no military significance for the US. But the sight of Iraqis dancing on Humvees and holding aloft the American helmet HAS military significance to the enemies. They are encouraged by such sights.
Ralph Peters just said on TV in an interview that such pictures are getting huge play in the Arab world and the US military has to realize it.

That is exactly why.
If you had the time for firefighters to show up, ambulances, and they had a perimeter set up too, then tow the hulks out of there.
If it gets hairy call in CAS and move out.
Napalm the wreckage.
Just kidding!
