Not only are revolvers more reliable than automatics in the right hands they are also very accurate. GIGN uses the MR-73 revolver (either the .44 magnum w/ 8in or .357 magnum w/ 10in barrel) and according to them a good shot can hit a 4cm wide disk at 100m. The compactness of the setup is another factor in using the revolver instead of an FR-F1.

Some of the operators are making the switch to semi-autos for their high capacity. The GSG-9 learned that lesson in Mogadishu in '77.

The shotgun may be scoped for firing slugs, although the barrel is quite short.

The big photos are promo shots made for French RAIDS-magazine, best military-themed magazine around. It was an article on 25 years of GIGN, and it had a photo essay about the equipment they use. If I had a scanner, I'd post the pics. But alas, I don't.
French forces in the snow? A cool picture.
