No he returned to the USA voluntarily and was sentenced to 30 days confinement for desertion and aiding the enemy, and was released after 24 days for good behaviour. He was dishonorably discharged after this.

You still get paid by the Army, even if you're in prison (though usually at half or quarter pay I think). And he wore the uniform because he was still in the Army, and serving out his punishment while on duty.

anyone else notice that he is pictured in what looks to be USMC Service Alpha uniform in the first pic (looks like an ega on the barracks cover and the lapel of his blouse)
