View Full Version : Possible new PLAN missile corvette

Saw these pictures at a Chinese military forum.

The vessel appears to be larger than any PLAN missile boat in existence, the size is similar to that of a
corvette sized vessel. It has a catamaran hull design with wave-piercing property, and possibly using
waterjet engine pods as main propulsion. On the aft deck of the vessel there are appeared to be two
sets of quadruple antiship missile launchers, one set of AK-630 CIWS can be seen on the forward deck.
Overall hull design is similar to that of the HSV used by the U.S. navy, and its superstructure design
is similar to that of the La Fayette class frigate, or the Forbin class destroyer(Horizon project) of the
French navy.

what do you think? Does this vessel has some sort of radar low observable property?

just dont understand you people; acting very hostile when talking about China, theres no ignorance, but knowledge, stereotype will not help you any.
kept using 'chincom' or other discriminative words, that only shows your babaric manners.

Have you been playing "Star Wars: Knights of the the Old Republic" recently? You just said the
exact same words the game character said in the game.

Well it's possible that's some old Chinese saying and the game designers used it. But that would mean Westerners COPIED from the Chinese! We can't have that can we?

I am not into this copyrights flame war crap so don't drag me into this.
Back to the topic, what can you tell us about this vessel design, what is
it's main purpose?

That catamaran design does remind me of LCS....

This new chinese thing does actually not look very much like the french
La Fayette, which is actually from the eighties and last ones build in the nineties...

http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/lafayette/images/lafayette7.jpg
For one thing the chinese is much smaller, lacks a helipad.
and its brigde much more angled back and lower.
And they are obviously build for quite different missions...

http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/lafayette/images/lafayette10.jpg
The only thing they have in common is that they are ships, and are made to be steathy...

no! they do not look exactly the same hust because they lack of skills in duplicating an exact one.

I mean chinese copy everything , look at them, they all have a pair of legs and a pair of hands.

Looks like a neat wee boat, the bulbs do extend quite far forward but this could be an attempt to minimise pitch, my bet is that it is a littoral warfare vessel.

I dont know of anything in the west thats quite like this. ( Please correct me if I'm wrong fellas ). Though I know the aussies used a big cat to move things around in Timor. Maybe the PLN saw it and though ooo - fast stable hull with a nice wide deck - stick a few guns on it and you have a nice patrol/anti piracy boat. Lets try it an' see - Fiendishly cunning these chaps.... :P

There have been a few multi hull warship concepts floating about for a while the US has at least a few prototypes, Norway has a some in service including a stealth testbed that is on loan to the US.

Well this is more of a bombshell that you may think. First of all this seems a corvete and not a frigate (much smaller and with limited surface to air capabilities).. Secondly, look at the shape of the hull. It looks like a wave piercing hull!!!! It is similar to the transport ships australian company called INCAT is building. It is very but very modern (US Navy is just now testing the concept ships of this class, i.e. wave piercing trimarans) and very but very fast and efficient.
Well those photos prove China is working on a extremely up to date technology for their litoral combat ship.. US need to CATCH UP pretty quick...
take care

Isn't the classic example of misguided copycatting the Tupulov knock-off of the B-29? The interned one the Russians copied had a sheet-metal patch covering damage on some part of the forward fuselage. THey copied that too.

Looks like waterjet propulsion. Is that a gatling canon on it or just a very small naval gun?
Quite modern, I'd say.

So what ship building programs does China have? I remember 4x destroyers type 52(b/c) and 2x frigates (type 55?). What about the 2 sovremeny? Now those corvettes. Did I miss something? Powerful fleet upgrade that is.

Nah surely the US would not do a China and copy something.
McMullen who did most of the design work have a good reputation for solid but somewhat unoriginal designs, the Littoral Combat Ship just looks like an overgrown Skjold.

Your right oldsoak there is nothing like this in service in the West although the US has obtained a wavepiercing vessel for their HSS trials I believe the Navy SEAL's have used it, I think it was constructed by INCAT of Tasmania. TRADOC has an on going study program on the HSS concept, there was some photos on this site of the HSS in action.

Didnt DERA have a trimaran on trials ? Be interesting if we go for something quite as radical in the future.

this is one of the three concepts that are curently competing for LCS.. it is based on norwegian Skjold and is known as a surface effect ship which is basically a cut down hovercraft.. the others use different hullforms... nobody knows at this time which concept will end up on top
