Israel's leadership has been shaken by a string of scandals
Israel is replacing its ambassador in El Salvador after the envoy was found outside the embassy, drunk, wearing only bondage gear, officials said.

"Our ambassador has been recalled immediately," a foreign ministry official told AFP news agency.

San Salvador was Tzuriel Refael's first post as ambassador, after promotion in 2006 from a foreign ministry position.

The official said that, although diplomats may have caused embarrassment in the past, this was "the last straw".

"During the 60 years of the State of Israel, some of our diplomats have caused us embarrassment, as happens in every country," the official said.

"But an ambassador behaving indecently on a public thoroughfare, that has never happened before."

Israel has been rocked by a recent series of misconduct and corruption scandals, shaking public confidence in the political leadership.

Criticism

Haaretz website reports that police found Mr Refael in the Israeli embassy compound two weeks ago.

He was inebriated, his hands were tied and he was gagged with a rubber ball in his mouth.

In spite of his drunken state, the naked figure was reportedly able to identify himself by his full name and job title.

In 2006, Israel's diplomatic service was criticised by the public watchdog for its appointments system.

The state comptroller's report singled out the foreign ministry appointments committee for its inadequate examination of candidates and lack of transparency.

My grand father was an ambassador and an alcoholic. He wasn't Israeli or into bondage (to my knowledge) though.

this isnt the first time an Israeli ambassador is making an ass out of himsely, but getting cought drunk, naked, gagged, (Israeli media also talked about "*** toys") is really above and beyond stupidity.

the main cause for these embarrassments is the way they pick the ambassadors - too often this serious duty is given to people who are associate with rotten politician as a favor, payment or bribe, without any preparation for it.

Israeli ambassador found naked, drunk on city street

Israel has recalled its ambassador to El Salvador after he was found on the streets of the capital drunk and naked apart from bondage gear.

Police in San Salvador found Tzuriel Refael in a street near the Israeli embassy.

He was drunk, his hands were bound and he was only able to identify himself after a rubber ball was removed from his mouth.

An Israeli Foreign Ministry official has described the ambassador's behaviour as an unprecedented embarrassment.

He has been recalled to Israel immediately.

San Salvador was Mr Refael's first posting as ambassador, after he was promoted last year from a technical position in the Foreign Ministry.

The scandal has led to renewed criticism over the way Israel selects its diplomats.

I'm afraid I don't understand. What makes ambassadors more ****e to alcoholism than other diplomats/attaches? Are embassies stocked full of booze, or is it all the dinners and parties they're invited to?

Embassies are packed with booze which they hold by cases. Embassies are a public relations operation and they have to entertain many official receptions.
