Allthoug it's a nice game it still makes me wonder if making a game to kinda "promote" people to join the army isn't kinda over the top. They don't really portray the darker side of war which you'll face when you join the army.
On the other hand I'm glad american taxpayers give us a nice game :)
Well that's one of the good things about the game, that it does promote realism. Unlike other games, you can't turn off the friendly fire mode, the grenades are extremely deadly at a good distance, and weapons jam every now and then. The game has been less popular because of these few things but it's a good effort on their part.

We use that game here in a lab setting to work on squad tactics.

Looks like a cool expo and all, but did anyone else notice the little town set up with the chopper wreckage in the center. Looks like they were trying to re create a scene from Mog. Just a little weird.

I know Hood but still I'm talking about civilian casualties and such but it's pretty hard I guess to recreate that in a video game.
Well, at this point it might be a limitation of the graphics etc. If you fill up an urban map with a lot of civvies that can accidentally be killed, it would probably slow things down too much. Stuff like that will probably be in games in the next couple of years though.

One of the big drawbacks I cant stand about that game is that there are only about 3 maps that are not a MILES operation.I cant stand that stuff on a game. Not only that but all the maps are basically made for a huge number of players to play on but when you do play there are only around 10-15 people on average.Plus it would be nice to hear background noise, like the game automatically plays gunfire so it seems you are part of a bigger operation than what you are looking at.You know, there are other firefights going on off in the distance or behind you, whatever. One more thing, even though the game is made to realism specs, you always have some asshole doing the bunny hop or just plain ol' cheating.I swear people never get tired of that stuff.
Other than that its a alright game.
:) One of the other games at E3 that looked incredible was full spectrum warrior. Supposedly it was made for the US military, and now it's being ported for the Xbox game console. It covers squad tactics, with you as the commander. You're never actually pulling the trigger in the game, but just moving your guys around. The detail is rather impressive. Here's a streaming movie of some of it.

Most of the maps arent Miles, only official Miles servers is the training ones in Mckenna. In insurgent camp they do have other sounds such as jets flying overhead. I agree, I dont like that jumping stuff...its all those old cs players, which I never liked cs in the first place.

Whats the Talon Robot System?
The standard TALON robot is a modular system that includes a removable, double-jointed, 64-inch (1.6m) arm and gripper. It is controlled through a two-way RF or fiber optic link from an attaché-sized Operator Control Unit (OCU). Along with up to seven cameras located on the vehicle, the OCU provides continuous situational data for precise vehicle positioning. TALON’s speed ranges from 4 mph (6.6 kmh) down to a creep with a continuous operational life of over four hours. It has been configured with more than 60 different mission packages and can carry more than 200 pounds (~90 kg) as a payload for maximum flexibility in any situation.Source: http://www.sovereign-publications.com/foster-miller.htm
A friend of mine, Wojtek visited E3 and took several photos of Talon robot. He gives me assent to show that pictures. Enjoy.

Hey does anyone know where this thing was put on, because im interested in the Army and that stuff looked tight as hell, and does anyone know where another one would be at.
Other than on the americasarmy.com, not sure. That event was for people in the game industry only, the public wasn't allowed to go.

E3 is a large computer game convention for game makers and others in the industry, where game designers show off their new things. I think some people that arent directly in the industry are allowed to go if they pre-register but I'm not sure. The expo runs on an annual basis.
Only people of the media that are cover gaming in general are allowed, and off course the developpers and such. Apart from them I don't believe other people are allowed (except the booth babes :P ).

No, and the official response is "when it's done."
the AA DEV-team gave an ETA on the 1.2 patch, and learned a lesson about giving ETAs to an impatient lynchmob :)

Enemy Contact
by Scorpion
Bouncing along a dirt track in our HMMMVs (****ounced HummVee and standing for High Mobility Multi-purpose Medium Weight Vehicle), we were moving in daylight to a new position to continue our mission.
The gunners were seated in their turrets manning the crew served weapons – in today’s mission those included the Mark 19 automatic grenade launcher, the M2 50 cal machine gun, and two SAW machine guns. In addition we had our usual arsenal of hand held weapons (SAWs, M4s, M16s, shotguns, and M9s). The whole team was alert to their surroundings and scanned the rocky hills for any signs of mischief. This was, after all, a very dangerous place still. Pockets of Taliban and AQ sympathizers were known to operate in the region.
Driving the second vehicle in the convoy of four HMMMVs, I eased off the gas as we entered a cut in the road that descended to a 180-degree bend. The lead vehicle had slowed to negotiate that hairpin turn and I was maintaining our agreed-upon interval in case of enemy contact. Just then, it happened. Through my dusty windshield, I saw the lead vehicle swing its Mk 19 around and let off a burst of grenade rounds onto the hillside to our right, where we could see enemy muzzleflashes. Our trail vehicle crew blurted over the radio “we’re taking fire!” and proceeded to unload a steady stream of 50 cal rounds. In a split second, my vehicle joined in the fracas with our SAW, as I maneuvered the vehicle to a spot where the gunner could best hit the enemy. After a period of intense fire, the officer in the lead vehicle, who had the best view of what was happening, dismounted a few men who shot at some scurrying enemy figures toting AK 47s.
Sometimes ambushes include RPGs or other heavy weapons, in which case we would punch the “pedal to the metal” and speed out of rocket range. Now it was becoming clear from these fleeing enemy that this action would not include such weapons. So, those of us not in the turrets jumped out and joined the fight with our individual weapons. The shadowy figures quickly disappeared into the rocky terrain above us.
We put a small dismounted element together and they moved up the hillside to where a few mud huts were located to talk to the local people and see if they could get a fix on our attackers. The vehicles stayed where they could cover their buddies fully with the heavier weapons. After some time, we found that we could get no useful information from the local people in the huts and we resumed the mounted patrol.
Two days later, I found myself on the same rocky slope, in another dismounted patrol. We had decided to surprise the people of the area and see what we could find out. One element proceeded, with the help of the local Afghan Army commander to talk to the locals again. I went with a small team up in the hills to try to find some evidence of the shooters. I could see that the terrain was ideal for a shooter to harass our convoy. There were plenty of rocks from which to make steady shooting platforms. Further, there were very nicely covered and concealed routes of escape up the mountain passes to the rear. I found several places that would have served the shooters well, but other than footprints and our own 50 cal rounds, no distinct evidence of their position. Even the brass casings were gone – either gobbled up by the rocky crevices or policed up by the Afghan kids who sell the brass in the village for a few rupees.
All in all, this fairly minor incident of enemy contact demonstrated a few things about Afghanistan. First, the country is still dangerous but our enemy is acting out of weakness right now. Second, finding small bands of bad guys in that steep and rocky terrain is really tough. Lastly, the local people largely do not support the enemy actions and know that this violence prevents many of the international relief efforts from entering their areas to help out. We spent a lot of time with the villagers over those days. The village elders all genuinely welcomed the Americans and went to great lengths to show that they appreciated us helping them. “You are not like the Soviets. You left your families to come here and help us. You are our friends and our guests. The Taliban and Al Qaeda are all our enemies,” said one of the elders. However, the porous Pakistan border and the very rugged terrain favor these small groups of enemy from being captured easily.
In the end, the terrorists will certainly lose, in my estimation, based on the local people’s disdain for them and fatigue from years of continued fighting. The answer for their own prosperity and happiness lies in helping the International Coalition. They know that routing out these small pockets of fighters will allow us to help them shed their medieval situation and join the 21st century.

This is one of those games that I want to like, but have a hard time doing so. Everyone wants to play desert style maps because of what's going on in the world right now. Unfortunately there's really only one desert map in here. They really need to get vehicles going also as the game engine supports it. When was the last time you saw an operation lately with regular soldiers that didn't have at least 1 support vehicle involved? There's so much about this game that's good.. just need to get those few extra things to bring in the people.

The only maps I play is bridge and insurgent camp. I just noticed that when you empty a mag and reload, the guy doesnt pull the charging handle back. Never noticed it till a few days ago. I also think they should scrap the whole honor system...that will surely bring more people in. Also cant wait to use the at-4 in the preview.
yeah, people really want the CQB and desert warfare stuff. running around green hills isn't very exciting. it may or may not be realistic, but it still has to be fun for people to be interested.

i also think that the honor system outta be scrapped, or improved greatly...

that is because reloading an ar15 does not involve pulling the charging handle. the bolt is held open much like how a pistols slide stays open after the last shot has been fired. put in new mag and then press the bolt catch above the mag well on the left side and you are done. in the game they also press the forward assist for good measure.

Hi, I work for Foster-Miller. I design all the tradeshow displays and data sheets for all the projects including the Talon. I can't see the photos from work due to a WebSense control on photo upload pages. Would it be possible for you to ask your friend to contact me? I would love to see and possibly use copies in future posters with his permission.
