I hate it when people do this...that is why I'm always suspicious of guys who tell me there were in the 'nam man...or something else. They're always special forces too. If you're going to impersonate why not just be a supply clerk Lance Corporal - why do they always try to be a Navy Cross winner or something?

And for instance when you see royalty in UK wearin military uniforms with a tonne of medals on, it gets kind of annoying, and there was a picture of charly boy in Iraq with a para beret on and badge.

I have no problem with that, it's their role and many of them have served in the armed forces, and more so than Bush that's for sure.

Quick google search revealed:

Over the next five years, Charles was committed to the military forces. Within that time, he graduated from a Sub Lieutenant to Captain of his own ship. Although not the ablest of seamen, he proved himself kind and thoughtful and was known for running a very happy ship. After five years, however, still blighted by homesickness, he was glad to end his service.

FBI agent Thomas A. Cottone, who was at the funeral, said that Carlson was at the funeral wearing a Marine Corps dress uniform with 24 medals. The uniform bore insignias indicating rank of captain.

"When I saw him wearing those medals, I knew right away what he was doing," said Cottone, who specializes in apprehending people who illegally wear military awards, particularly Congressional Medals of Honor.

Cottone, a parishioner at Our Lady of the Mountain Church, said Carlson first claimed to have earned the medals but later admitted that he had never served in the military.

Deserves a :bash:

Glad I haven't heard of anything like that here.

Mantis you get a F in reading comprehension. From the article :

FBI agents dont run around "apprehending people" to issue warnings or misdemeanors.

I never understand why anyone would fake being a Marine. An Army Tanker maybe I could see that.

I tried to sign up for the Marines but I couldn't pass the test.

So, should Prince Andrew not be seen pictured here...

Re-enacting is a different story, as far as patches go.

As for airsodting/ paintballing/ reenacting with insignias an patches and the like, you could say that you ware a para badge for example out of respect for what they do and because you think they are badass. Dosn't mean you think you are one, although playing with the thought for a couple of hours dosn't do any harm ;)

Just be glad he wasnt ripping people out of money (there are a fair few cases of fake nam vets doing this). Although it does disrespect everyone who has earned the medals, atleast he wasnt conning people out of money.

Yeah them to........

i think there was a big topic on all of the wearing military insignia thing ages ago.

Uh oh...this guy (Mantis) is definitely a WPW..."Web Professional Wannabe"....I mean after all he's using a forum which is steeped in internet technology.... he was probably even sitting in a chair at a desk when he posted- which is totally what real "Web professionals" do...

Hope he's never used Photoshop or dabbled in HTML...or...even built his own website...cause his WPW meter would be way off the charts :D

When medals are awarded I'm assuming that proper records are kept indicating who has been awarded the medal in the past, why bother faking it when you know that there is a chance that you will get caught if people investigate you.

Sorry for the confusion Mantis- I'm just trying to make the point that you can call anyone a "wannebe" for anything that they're not officially, but it's pretty absurd to do so- as in since I'm a "web professional" I can call those who aren't, but use the technology, "wannabes"- naturally that would be pretty silly. Anyway, the intended "tongue-in-cheek" nature of the post transcended the limits of the delivery method- sorry 'bout that.

The original thread was about a guy who was missleading people and disrespecting a funeral by posing publicly as a marine. I don't see why that warrents making the airsoft crowd feel stupid for doing what they do- considering that their intentions are probably not so beguiling.

I play a little paintball myself, and while the reinactment/patches thing really isn't my cup 'o tea either, there's just no need to take every opportunity to pick on the guys who are into that. People who wear those patches know if they've earned them or not, and that's really all that matters.

Ok now that I've taken this thread waaay off topic, I'll get off my soap box.

IIRC, he flew a helicopter in the Falklands. I remember seeing a photo in the early '80s. Will try to find it...

I wore my Gandfathers medals that he earned in WW2 to honnor him at his funeral.
I have never touched them since (in a glass case). I always thought that was acceptable but I never made the claim that I Earned them, I always said that they were his, and then recounted some of his war stories. One would think that was ok but others here may disagree.....

Ah yes, I believe that you can wear your father's medals on the right side. Well, that's for Canada anyways... not sure if you are still allowed to do that though.
