By JPOST.COM STAFF

An explosion rocked central Damascus and a gun battle erupted between Syrian troops and unidentified gunmen in the syrian capital Tuesday night, CNN reported.

Global television news agencies report a series of explosions heard in the Syrian capital.

The gun battle is reportedly taking place in an area between the Iranian and Canadian embassies.

CNN reported that calls have been made to doctors to return to hospitals. There are no reports yet of casualties.

Initial reports on Channel 2 said that a car bomb exploded outside the British embassy in Damascus. The report has not been confirmed.

Fox news just reported that 15 blasts took place and syrian tv was interrupted to say that "syrian security forces are engaged in battle with a terrorist band" I think they are talking about the kurds maybe continuing that semi-uprising that was happening last month.

(CNN) -- An hour-long battle between police and gunmen broke out Tuesday in the Syrian capital of Damascus near the Iranian and Canadian embassies, sources said.

At least six explosions preceded the gunfire at about 8 p.m. (1 p.m. ET), according to witnesses.

Syrian TV quoted security sources as saying a "group of terrorists engaged in random fire with Syrian security forces."

The report said Syrian security forces had the situation under control. Police had sealed off the area.

A restaurant and a building partly used by the United Nations were heavily damaged, witnesses said.

The gunbattle was along Meze Road, in the rear of the Iranian Embassy, according to a source at the British Embassy. The source said no Britons had been injured.

A senior State Department official said the battle was not near the U.S. Embassy.

Iranian TV reported there was no damage to Iran's embassy and no injuries among the Iranians who work there. The report also said three people, armed with grenades, had been arrested.

A doctor told CNN at least five civilians have been taken to hospitals for treatment and a call was issued for doctors to report to emergency rooms.
