In less than 80 days, the turret prototype on this Humvee was taken from sketched concept to hard-core assembly. The igloo-shaped structure is designed to wrap around and over the turret gunner, thereby minimizing the sniper threat. The protective prototype?s development and testing was motivated by the death of Airman 1st Class Leebernard Chavis, who was killed by sniper fire in October 2006.

can someone explain why some US soldiers and Marines are wearing coveralls instead of regular uniforms? Does it mean they are crewman who dismounted or is it because they belong to an armoured unit? It's probably been explained before. Looks like it would be cooler in the summer to wear them instead of ACU.

One main reason.
Fire-resistant Nomex Flightsuits are worn for protection from IED related flash burn injuries, the most common injury in theater.

I don't understand, why didn't they make this all-around protective turret sooner? It seems like an obvious thing to make to give the gunners better protection..?

Marksman, not sniper right ?
The ACOG and suppressor are likely privately owned, though he might be an actual squad designated marksman.
The Army has purchased something like 80,000 suppressors recently, so those should be showing up overseas very soon. They will become a general issue item to most combat arms troops.

One main reason.
Fire-resistant Nomex Flightsuits are worn for protection from IED related flash burn injuries, the most common injury in theater.
Yeah I know nomex is great, but then everyone would wear it. There must be some other reason why. The only one I can figure is that these guys are part of a CAV or amour unit, and they are just in a dismounted role.

Just shows how small we really are, new BIG species still being found. Thats awesome!
Not found. They just now realized it was a different species, rather than a sub-species. Clouded Leopards have been known for awhile now. They are the top predator on Borneo.
WASHINGTON - Scientists have discovered that the clouded leopard found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra is an entirely new species of cat. The secretive rainforest animal was originally thought to be the same species as the one found in mainland Southeast Asia.
...
"It's incredible that no one has ever noticed these differences."
...
"For over a hundred years we have been looking at this animal and never realized it was unique," said Adam Tomasek, head of WWF's Borneo and Sumatra program.

U.S soldiers in riot gear serving in the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Kosovo deploy near a Serb Orthodox church during a rapid deployment exercise in the eastern Kosovo village of Ropotovo on Thursday, March 15. 2007. Kosovo is patrolled by a 16,000-strong NATO-led peacekeeping force, which is in charge of overall security. The deployment of additional forces occurs as the U.N. Security Council prepares to discuss a contentious plan that would grant the province supervised statehood. However, NATO said that the exercise was "not in response to, or in preparation for, any current situation either ongoing or expected within Kosovo" which has been under international administration since 1999, when NATO airstrikes ended a Serbian crackdown on independence-seeking ethnic Albanians.

I've seen it live on TV. Demszky got so angry, he was actually shaking as he read out(screamed actually) his speech. It was kind of funny and sad at the same time.
They booed at the National Museum too, you could hardly hear what the actors were saying during their show. They claim to be patriots, yet they have absolutely no respect for our National Day.:|
They are fighting with the riot cops right now. It's not serious yet, but I guess we're looking forward for a long night...

Stupid question: Why does the US still have AH-64's in Kosovo ? Seems a bit out place, isn't the demand for such aircrafts higher in Iraq/Afghanistan, or are the reconnaissance capabilities of the AH-64's superior to, let's say a Blackhawk ?

the optics and sensors on the AH helps with recon though I'd think that the presence of the AH might also help with riot control. It did great with riots after the NATO Kosova campaign.

I don't understand, why didn't they make this all-around protective turret sooner? It seems like an obvious thing to make to give the gunners better protection..?
it would seem like common sense, however they have spent so much money with different turret armour variants and canopoys that by now the pentagon could have paid for a Remotley operated turret like CROWS

U.S Army helicopters take off after deploying U.S soldiers serving in the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Kosovo to guard a Serb Orthodox Church during a rapid deployment exercise in the eastern Kosovo village of Ropotovo on Thursday, March 15. 2007
The term "guard a Serb Orthodox Church" is an insult to the Serbian people since NATO has done a horrible job allegedly protecting Serbs considering the fact that over 150 World Heritage sites and ancient holy sites have burned under NATO's supervision or lack thereof .
