Abizaid, 55, who isn't giving interviews as he departs, has said his retirement had long been planned and has nothing to do with unhappiness with the job he's done - either from him or his superiors.

"When people talk among themselves, they'll say, 'Abizaid has a 40-pound brain,' " Michael Pasquarett, a retired colonel who teaches at the Army War College, told the Atlantic Monthly in a 2003 story.

Alertness squads are not military, nor police (hence no uniform). They are ex-military (some ex-SF) civillian who volunteer for this task. The weapons are supplied by the army/police, and equipment (laser pointers, flashlights, vests etc') are usually bought by the people.

I don't understand what you mean... You're article had no bearing on my comment, no offense. I remarked that it was doubtful he would remain out of the Iraq discussion after his retirement. The Army should have gave those FAKE guns back to the rebels as a ****y trap to blow up in their hands when they use it....cost effective . I guess they kept the good condition guns for their own armory or sold it back to the rebels hehehehehe
