Ugh, recently my computer has got a new, extremely annoying problem, and any advice/assistance in solving it would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, it involves the mouse pointer and mouse clicking action. I have tried several mouses and the problems persist - so I don't think it is a problem there. The problem I am having is that after random periods of time, the mouse clicking action ceases to function, but not fully ceasing.

Its hard to explain, but an example:

1) I am browsing the internet and the problem occurs. I click on links but nothing happens, I click on the menu items on the browser toolbar and they flash but do not open or anything. When I click the minimize/maximize or close browser buttons however they work fine. Also, I cannot right click anything whatsoever, this function completely vanishes. I can also click on the start menu button but anything on the start menu is inaccessable, even after franticly clicking everything. Double clicking desktop items does not work, same goes for any file folders I have open. I have to press the reset button on the computer to restart.

I have noticed though that on some occasions I am able to get the Log Out button to register, and after logging out/logging in the problem temporarily fixes itself, but then shortly comes back.

Im not sure if any of these could be causes, but I have recently:
1) Defragged my main hard drive
2) Installed Lavasoft Adaware and Spybot: Search and Destroy
3) Installed Photoshop (which altered some file-opening preferences)
4) De-dusted inside computer case (didnt touch any components)

Any help is greatly appreciated, I can offer further information if requested.

I don't know specifically what your problem is, but have you tried troubleshooting your mouse port?

Problem looks software...You've probably instaled some hostile/troianed soft. Did you installed/ran any programs found in interent or from other unsure source recently?.

-Check if **** happens after you run some program - if yes get ride of it
-Check if you have some strange processes under ctrl-alt-delete/ task manager/processes you havent seen before- kill them and check if that helps if yes try to determine with process is quilty and get ride of it by deleting exe file of that process.
-Create new user and log as him, if **** will not happen. it is application run at startup of you normall user- try to find what processes cause ****, in the way mentioned above
-Try using some **** detecting software
-Be creative there could be other reasons for such behavior and ways of geting ride of it...
-If nothing helps reinstal xp or learn how to use linux :)

Lavasoft is great but it sometimes do not detect some troians( I had one which I had to remove manually).

Yeah it looks like software problem especially if you tried other mouses...

Like hermanek said try to use alt ctrl del and kill some proces do not kill local or system try kill all other proceses if this do not help try to kill those with shortest name troians usualy have 2-3 lettes long names, also troian files are basicaly small (around 15-30kb) try toi check START-->Programs-->Startup for some unknown files (usualy without icon)

Mine has behaved this when a program or a folder is not responding for some reason. Hit control, alt, delete and see if if there are any applications that are not responding. If there are shut them down.
