I was at the airshow a while ago and in the ground display was a F-117 Nighthawk. It was the only aircraft there that had 3 armed military personnel surrounding it and when they towed it out so it could go fly, people started taking pictures of the back end of the aircraft. Well instantly all the gaurds went infront of peoples cameras and told them to stop taking pictures. One old lady who kept taking pictures had her camera taken away and was told if she takes anymore pictures her camera would be taken away! What is so secret at the back end of a nighthawk?!?!

and if you don't here from me again, it probably means the government secretly assasinated me

If you think they're hiding some kind of top-secret technology, then why would you think that anyone here knows anything, or that they would reveal it if they did?

Maybe has something to do with the exausht/heat sig....

good point, but there is quite a few people who work on the f-117 nighthawk that might know somthing

Well, we don't know how the stealth dissipates, or hides its heat exhaust. It's top secret. Infrared cameras primarily look at in the infrared spectrum because that's what heat gives off.

We simply can't afford other nations to develop the same thing. Even I'm curious how they hide it.

its alien technology taken from the UFO that crashed at Roswell

F-117 isn't so secret anymore as it was back in 90's.
F-117 poor performance makes it almost imbossible to fly without computer.
-> F-117 is soon gonna be replaced by variations of F-22 and F-35.
I would say that F-22 gots most secret details. I couldn't find almost any interesting things from net.

P.S. Those guards take the grannys camera away because he had annoying flash on it :D

As far as I know, reliance on flight control computer is not that unique anymore. And despite F-117 is old, there aren't many as stealthy aircraft in the world. Therefore I think it's pretty reasonable to protect it's secrets even if the aircraft is considered obsolete.

Every modern fighter jet since the F-16 has been impossible to fly without computers.

There was a stink about that with the B2 too when that Chinese spy in Hawaii nicked the plans of how that hides its heat exhaust and sent it back to China.

Oh don't worry - it's just "Opsec". You should be careful on this site as posting information readily available on the internet will violate the wannabe crowd's notion of secrecy.

Any inherently unstable aircraft needs a flight computer to keep it stable in the air. No human can make adjustments fast enough to keep an unstable aircraft balanced and flying in a straight line (unless said human is a Jedi Knight!). The F-16 is unstable along one axis, whereas the F-22 is unstable along both axes. Either way, they all need computers in order to maintain stability in the air.

The one interesting detail on the F-117 is the fact that the exhaust gases are cooled before being expelled from the aircraft. This is to prevent heat seekers from locking on to the aircraft. It is supposed to be done with some heat-dissipating tiles and some other cooling technology and is still somewhat secret. This is probably why the guards were trying to prevent people from photographing the rear of the airplane. Oddly enough, I don't remember them enforcing that rule back in 1997 in an airshow at Edwards AFB.
