"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Dryden Flight Research Center. Local time is 13:25. For your safety and comfort, we ask that you please remain seated with your seat belt fastened until the Captain turns off the Fasten Seat Belt sign. This will indicate that we have come to a complete stop at the gate and it is safe for you to move about. Please check around your seat for any personal belongings you may have brought onboard with you. When you open the overhead bins, please use caution as some heavy objects may have shifted during the flight.
On behalf of the entire crew, it has been a pleasure serving you today and we are looking forward to see you in one of our future flights. Have a nice day and thank you for choosing NASA Airlines."

If I remember correctly, this was test of a new fuel that designed to be less likely to ignite in crashes. Some reason they decide not to use it.

Maybe they decided not to use it becasue of the huge fireball that resulted during the crash. ;)
Seriously though, I think that you are correct. IIRC this was a test of either a new fuel or an additive that was supposed to decrease the chances of fire during a crash.

Yeah, it was an anti-misting additive, but the additive needed to be broken down before entry through the gas lines to the engine, to prevent clogging. That video just shows how successful that additive really was. I believe NASA has done a similar experiment when they crashed a jet into the side of a mountain, but with similar results.

:D It looks like that to me too.
But it is because those lines on the side.
They use it to invetigate the crash to mesure stuff from the tape (i think)

The additive was supposed to prevent misting....and it did.
The only problem was that is made the fuel more gelatine like to do it- so basically you have a plane full of napalm ;)
The lighting might screw with electrical systems on the plane. True, it's not grounded so it's minimal. Bit the electrivity has to go through the plane none the less and if the wires/ breakers can't take it- they blow or burn.

indeed, about 90% of the time lightning strikes, which are rare, cause absolutely no problems with the aircraft. The other 10% of the time they may cause minor problems with Communications radios, VOR equipment and cockpit indicators.

You mean they crashed this thing on purpose? rofl
Cool pictures.
Did anyone ever see pics from the Thunderbird F-16 crash last summer in Mountain Home AFB in Idaho?
