Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could assist me on a paper that i am currently writing. I need some information on General Patton's life and career. Did try searching the internet search engines but i didn't come up with many hits.

One of the main things i wish to find out is an overall comparison between the Film and the Man, inaccuracies, etc. I figured the military history section is the best place to ask for help.

Any help would be Appreciated. Thank you MP.net community.

I don't want to do your homework.

BUT

What is the focus of your paper?
Actual events?
Hollywood screenwriting?
or comparison between the film and the movie?

Keep in mind the movie was released during the Vietnam War.

Historical war movies are reflective of the times they were produced.

It is a comparison between the film and the man, did things portrayed ring true to his personality, etc, etc. Were events depicted accurate to events that took place in his military career.

You won't be doing my homework, that part i'll handle :) i just need some information that can assist me in writing the paper. As i said i've exhausted most of my resources and theres not many sites based on picking through the film.

Contact the Gen. George Patton Museum at Ft. Knox.
US Army also has historians that keep archival records.

Doesn't anyone go to the library anymore? Doesn't your teacher require a bibliography of somethign more than www sites? Ugh! There are hundreds of biographies on this man, go pick one up.

Like the man said try your local library. Look for a book published after 1970 (the release date of the movie), maybe it will discus his protrayal in the movie.

Wiki has some info on the movie. here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patton_(film)).

edit. Found this (http://www.pattonuncovered.com/html/the__patton__movie.html), it talks about inaccuracies in the movie.

I checked out this second link. Seems pretty good, and no doubt our "student" will cut and paste from it. Hopefully, though, he won't keep the word "irregardless" in there! I laugh everytime I hear that word. They use it on The Sopranos all the time, and it's supposed to be funny, SINCE IT'S NOT A WORD! The info on that site did make for an interesting read.

One of my favourite quotes accredited to patton is as follows;

Someone asked him why he carried a pearl-handled revolver, and Patton answered "only pimps carry pearl-handled revolvers!" (his revolvers had ivory or just white grips, and from what i've heard it actually insulted him that anyone believed he'd carry a pearl-handled weapon.)

"Only a pimp from a cheap New Orleans Whorehouse would carry a pearl-handled pistol". Somewhat apocryphal.

:| That's a little bit insulting to be honest with you. And yes i'm a student, Just because half the population my age level(obvious exageration for a purpose) copies and pastes entire reports doesn't mean i will; does it? and No. I didn't copy and paste.

If you want to know about the 'real deal' when it comes to George S. Patton Jr., my suggestion is that you go to a main branch library and pick up 'General Patton - A Soldiers Life', by Stanley P. Hirshon.

It is a comprehensive work that is superior to everything that came before it, including 'Patton:Ordeal and Triumph' by Ladislas Farago. The reason it is so much better is that it draws from the Patton papers, which were not donated to West Point until long after Farago wrote his work in 1962. This book will take you up and down the spectrum that is G. S. Patton Jr.

A chapter at the end explains how the 1970 movie came to be made. It also covers the Patton family involvement and reaction to the efforts of Hollywood folk to get it made. You won't ever find stuff like this at wiki, which I have a tendency to completely ignor where deep research is needed - too many errors there in the text. Anyway, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Cya! :)

War as I Knew It is a book written by the General himself. The man's own words should give you real insight into his thoughts and beliefs.

Or was the paper due last month?
