Wasn't this the inspiration for the "If he can fight with his guts out, he can drink from my canteen anyday!" line in Apocalypse Now? I've seen this picture before, and apparently, the photographer was about to sue Coppolla because this was the excact same that happened and was said by some officer when this pic was taken. Coppola took a liking and used it in the film.
