This is question for active duty U.S. military (specifically U.S. Army) or anyone else in the know. What are the regs for buying and installing modifications to your Army issued weapon, such as butt stocks, sights, etc., during deployment. Are there any regs? Is it completely illegal? Or is it reserved for those with authority or those with a little more leeway (SOCOM)?
Thanks.

It depends. If you are talking outside modifications it was usually ok. Some of the scout snipers bought harris bipods with an adapter for their M-4's. All the sights we had were sufficient. Personal purchase would be too expensive. ACOG and EOTECH sights cost a lot. However our unit used discretionary funds for a "local purchse" of scopes from military and hunting stores around the base. Stocks would be alright as well. It would definately be looked down upon if you did anything to the inside of the weapon for example if you installed a sensative trigger, that would be a no go.

Also often has to do with the unit SOPs and how strict the CSM is. Some allow more latitude than others--but as noted, making internal changes is generally restricted to authorized changes by the armorer or DS.

So basically anything that can done while still returning the weapon to as issued condition is a go? A kind of, "out of sight, out of mind" status by those in charge?

This changes from unit to unit, depends on what the chain of command wants. Why do you want to know, this may help people to answer your question more accurately.

I was just curious. When you look at pictures you seem so many variatons on each individuals weapon, even within the same unit. I've also read posts are other forums where people have talked about "looking for a new stock before my next deployment" etc. etc.

It is a rare case that commnading officers will alllow weapon mods, some even go as far as not allowing attaching optics to carry handles.
But in those pictures you see, you will see basically the same equipment purchased through the cahin of command, but due to production and manufacture capabilities to support the war effort, you will see SOPMOD M4 with either Aimpoint of EOTeh and a few varations on Aimpoint mounts.

Alot of that is the armory getting only a certain amount of things and not individual purchases. Like say your company armorer gets in 30 Crane stocks, obviously you may not get one. So you'll see guys within the same squad, some with Crane stocks, others without. Usually you play a little game of rock, paper, rank.

Around these parts rock, paper, rank is substituted with a little wrastlin.
