Organization's campaign for denuclearized Middle East takes it from Teheran to Tel Aviv. Activists warn aging Dimona plant a disaster waiting to happen, issue report detailing Israel's nuclear capabilities

"Despite Israel's policy of nuclear ambiguity, international reports maintain that this country has developed nuclear facilities and one of them, the Nahal Sorek science reactor, is only 30 kilometers from Tel Aviv," said Yonatan Leibowitz, Greenpeace Mediterranean communications director, on Thursday as environmental activists rallied against nuclear power in the Middle East.

Speaking at a press conference on the beach with the Rainbow Warrior, Greenpeace's official flagship docked in the background, Leibowitz released a report detailing the potential dangers posed to the populations of Iran, Israel and Turkey by nuclear installations. In front of the Rainbow Warrior, a Zeppelin flew with a banner calling for a 'Nuclear Free Middle East' and, in Hebrew, 'Nuclear is dangerous for us all.'

This is the latest stop for the Rainbow Warrior, who in its three-month tour of the region has already visited Iran, Yemen, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bahrain, Kuwait and Egypt.

Rainbow Warrior Captain Mike Finkin told Ynet on Thursday that the voyage, while rewarding has been difficult. "It's hard to tour the Gulf, one hurdle after another, a lot of bureaucracy and many difficulties. Here in the western world Greenpeace has a reputation and it's recognized, especially in Israel. It's a relief to get here because we're welcomed with open arms, even the navy knows us. But there we're strangers."

'Israelis have a right to know'

A heavy water plutonium/tritium production reactor, plutonium reprocessing facility, uranium processing and fuel production facility, uranium enrichment facilities, waste-treatment plant, high-level waste storage facility, five megawatt research reactor and several storage facilities for tactical nuclear weapons – all these and more, says the Greenpeace report, are housed near population centers throughout Israel.

The report also asserts that Israel has 20 SLCM (submarine-launched cruise missiles) with nuclear warheads, all of which are stored in a Haifa naval base. Haifa was a frequent target for Hizbullah rockets during the Second Lebanon War.

"Israelis have the right to know where these facilities are and the right to be informed about the serious risks to health and the environment posed by these installations. The pursuit of a policy of ambiguity about the possible existence of a nuclear program in Israel only serves to destabilize the region. What is needed is a policy of honesty and transparency - one that will pave the way to a nuclear free Middle-East," said Leibowitz.

The report presents various disaster scenarios in the Dimona nuclear facility, stating that the advanced age of the plant and its constant use have rendered it even more dangerous. A melt-down in Dimona could affect an area of up to 400 km, said the report.

"Dispersal of the uranium from site would also be highly toxic to populations around the facility causing damage to internal organs, particularly the kidneys as well as increasing the risk of cancer and other genetic defects in affected populations," details the report. However the more likely course of events, according to Greenpeace, will be an accident involving leakage of radioactive material from the site or a fire involving the highly pyrophoric plutonium stored on-site.

'A threat to the entire region'

"Nuclear power and nuclear weapons pose a serious threat to the safety and security of the entire region," said Paul Horsman, peaceful energy coordinator for Greenpeace. "Throughout this tour Greenpeace has been calling on all countries to join the discussion for a nuclear free Middle-East and today in Tel Aviv we call on Israel to do the same. Nuclear technology is not the solution to either national security or energy needs.

"In Iran we spoke with academics, government officials and various organizations about the alternate energy sources Iran can use," said Horsman.

"No matter what the intent, military or peaceful, the presence of nuclear technology and facilities in the Middle East are a clear and present danger for the local population, both in the minor accident scenarios and in the worst cases the threats that could extend beyond national boundaries and threaten neighboring populations," concludes the report.

The Greenpeace tour will continue to Lebanon, and is scheduled to end in Turkey by mid-April.

Apart of their rant, the interesting part is the 20 SLCMs that they claim we have and another thing that for some reason wasn't translated to the english version, they wrote that Israel have a land, naval and aerial nuclear reactors, WTH is an aerial nuclear reactor? A zeppelin with nuclear propulsion?
They also talked about tactical nukes in the hebrew version and said where we apparently host them.

About the nuclear weapons itself. Had Israel decided not to acquire nukes in the past, Iran wouldnt be so keen on doing the same thing now (the coalition has done its own share of course).

Im against nuclear power. Itīs not a permanent solution and getting rid of the waste is problematic, future generations have to bear the consequences of our foolishness.

Isreal is one of the few nations in the world today that absolutely cannot afford to lose a total war because the end result would almost certainly be genocide against the 70% of its people who are Jews. The nukes it owns are additional insurance against that.

I wonder if Greenpeace would have complained in 1944 about the air pollution being generated by the burning of Jewish corpses in Nazi death camp ovens!

Sometimes I wonder why this guys just donīt go home to their families, dogs or trees. It is very interesting to read that they felt `secure`in Israel. And that they were received with open arms. It TAKES manny lifes to keep the peace they enjoyed and nothing else. We are what we are and nobody can judge what we do or donīt, because they do not live in our shoes. Majority of the PEACE movements from the 60īs were the terrorist organizations of the 70īs under the logo: PEACE AT ANY COST. When I visit Europe in the 80īs, every girl I meet told me to not get them pregnant because they did not wanted to raise a son in a world that would be destroyed by a nuclear holocaust. PIPE DREAMS!!!

Today we have a world that is about to be destroyed by what??? Who knows!!! You may believe in anything you please, but I believe that we must be here to be able to defend our way of life. This holliday that aproaches remind us that they wanted to destroy us before and if we let, they will try it again. Sorry, Greenpeace of ..., you lose!!

Well, I think that in this case they are doing an excellent job. First they piss off Iran and now they are helping to spread all kind of rumors about Israel's nuclear capabilities. Apparently we have a flying nuclear reactor, tens of nuclear cruise missiles and lots of tactical nukes. Sounds like great deterrence.

Against nuclear power eh? what do you think has kept the peace in Europe for the last 60 years?

It wasn't peace and love buddy it was nuclear terror which makes war almost impossible between major combatant nations.

Isreal having nukes is like giving the kitchen knives to adults for safe keeping. Letting the rest of the ME get them is like passing the knives out to the kids.

Amen.

Leastways Israelis as a whole are more circumspect about weaponry of any sort.

What a load of crap. Israel has never threatened anyone with its nukes, in fact in denies having them. This ambiguity is its deterrence, so other hostile countries in the region cannot be justified in aquiring them as a response. That is why Iran is Denying it is aquiring nukes, yet doing everything that is required in order to achieve that goal. Iran does not need nuclear weapons, unless the government intends to "wipe Israel off the map". if Iran has enemies, it is because they are creating them. Name one time that the Israeli government has threated to nuke someone? Its arsenal is safety switch that is only to be used if Israel is about to be overrun. I doubt that Iran would use them for the same purpose.

There does not need to be any new nuclear powers. The world needs to draw a line in the sand, and that line needs to be drawn in Iran.

What are you talking about? nuclear power is the cleanrst way to produce
electricity and the nuclear reactors in the west are up to a very high standarts of saftey. Is a great way to produce clean and cheap energy.

That is entirely correct. But it doesn't even matter. These greenpeace fools would have us all living in grass huts if they had their way.

If I paint my glock, can I shove them my "green piece"?
I know, it's lame.

On a more serious note, Greenpeace has completely slided from it's original format. It was a bunch of moonbats at the beginning, they were even kinda cute in their actions against whale hunters, and showed some balls at that.
it is a huge international money maker today.

yeah, one of the original founders of greenpeace has since left and frequently speaks out against them now due to their drastically different agenda than what they were created for.

Just compare Israelīs and Iranīs military activities in the last 50 years. The whole idea that "Iran is building nukes in order to wipe Israel off the map" is completely redicilous. If I was a country and I saw that my neighbours were being invaded by a power that has also listed me as part of the axis of evil, I might actually consider getting nukes.

Their leaders are fundamentalists but why would they want to destroy their own coutnry and heritage by doing a stupid thing like starting a nuclear war?

-Nuclear facilities are vulnerable to terrorist attacks and such an attack could devastate an entire country.

-Nuclear power produces waste which remains hazardous for tens of thousands of years.

-Radioactive discharges into the seas and atmosphere.

-Technology connected to making nuclear weapons.

-The only safe reactor has a 90 million mile evacuation zone.

The more we build these things, the more we move our responsbility to the future generations.
