There is the Lemat 9 shot/18g combination revolver of course. I just mention it because of it's historical value as an unusual design.

In summary: Pretty much any number, at least there's room for a wide variety. 6 shot being the most common, but there are a lot of 5 shot "compacts" around and 7 shot example aren't unknown. So just by spotting a revovler at a distance you couldn't definatively say how many rounds it may hold unless you are close enough to ID the exact model.

Big guns with big cartridges (Smith and Wesson .500SW) and small guns designed for concealed carry/backup usually have fewer shots. Big guns because you'd end up with an akward rifle, and small ones so you don't flag yourself or have an overly bulky gun.

The J-frame S&W revolvers are 5-shots, as were/are the Charter Arms Undercover, Bulldog and Pugs. Same with the Ruger SP101. The Casull .454 is a 5-shot as well. Somebody mentioned concealables and monsters and that about covers it. Standard frame (S&W K, N, L frames and the like) usually held 6, but 7 & * are out there. In Miami, I worked w/an old school Sgt that carried a S&W 686 4" in .357 w/a 7 round cylinder. It was a neat piece.

BTW, with single action revolvers, it was customary to only load five, even though they held six, so the hammer would rest on an empty chamber.

Unless you pulled your first shot because you were anticipating the recoil and the bad guy quickly unloads 5 well placed shots of .38 while your stumbling around deaf and blind from the muzzle flash.

It's got a muzzle brake so hopefully the recoil wouldn't be too extreme ;)

With those rounds in the picture and that monstrosity of a handheld field gun, he looks like he's off vampire hunting.

The recoil is not bad at all, actually that is one of the most enjoyable things of shooting .500 S&W. Recoil is believe it or not is "feel good" not painful like 357 mag +P in super light snub nose.
You are right that he might need all of those 5 shots to be well placed for them to be affective BUT in .500S&W even a badly placed shot can be very effective (like someone's arm or leg flying off). For example those HP Platinum tip have more energy that most 30-06 but with twice the weight of 30-06.

Oh, and one bad shot can even take out someone at 100yd with this. I don't care how well someone can shoot .38 special they wont be able to harm you with their revolver at that distance.

No worries.

Personal preference, but that piece as a legitimate self defense pistol outside of the home or some sort of static defense scenario would probably be my last choice.

Agree, I also would rather have a shotgun or even AR 15 for HD then a revolver.
This was not designed as self defense revolver for vs. humans but rather hunting and self defense vs. bears.

IMO those big revolvers r really meant for hunting applications preferably and maybe some shilo long range comp. Not so pratical for self-defence scenario except with uniquely big bear encounter with hoping tat big firework of tat big revolver will scare the daylight out of the beast.p-)

and we can also add the psychi of some males, Bigger = more macho, Hey I am a man, I can handle a 105 in a pistol......... I never shoot anything under 50 cal. Anything less than 50 cal is for women and children.

The neat thing today is compensators and suppressors are more common. I have a Taurus fully compensated in 44 MAG it is a pleasure to shoot full mags in. It is my backup hunting pistols for bears. I had a Model 29 in a 4 inch barrel......... it was brutal to shoot.

Question: When you click on prices at Thunder 5 web site it says they hope 2008 won't start closing of the small gun manufacturers. Why? What's going on?
