Call me harsh, but I think it's pathetic on the King family parts to bitch these papers, when they more than likely they'll sell them.

And the fact they made a handsome profit from previously sold properties.

I wont call you harsh brother. I agree! Maybe the $32 million dollars the King family made from selling off his other papers and memorabilia wasn't enough for them, and now they want their mitts on the $100K to $300K these papers will grab at auction as well. Seems more about greed than protecting MLK's legacy, IMHO.

I fail to see how they can claim the papers belong to the King estate. Possession is 9/10ths of the law, and the women was given them in a debt settlement. Plus, by their own admission the King clan did not even know these documents existed until they heard about the auction. That will leave them with a serious uphill battle to get any monies made from their sale.

On a similar topic, I live in King County, Washington, and in the last few years, they chose to rewrite history and name the county after MLK. (Anyone read 1984?) It was originally named for an Alabama senator from the antebellum period named Rufus King. They all mention how he was a slave owner, though he was also the alleged gay-lover of President Buchanan... and they recently changed the county logo, without voter approval, spending half a million dollars, to King's face. I just wonder if the King family is going to want to cash in on this too.

How pretentious are our politicians, to name ourselves after MLK in such a hollow gesture. We didn't even have to change the actual name!!!!!!

Wow, did not know that about King County! Thanks thscott. "Hollow gesture" certainly seems like an accurate analysis there. No doubt that MLK was a GREAT, heroic man, but using his legacy in such a way smacks of political exploitation to me. Who was it in the State or County legislature that was leading the push for this change without voter approval?

It is one of those dangerous issues where if any politician challenged the idea of the name change for any reason at all and tried to debate it openly, they would probably be branded as a racist by some. It sounds like they chose MLK as the man to adopt as the county namesake primarily because his last name was King and they could score points from a racial perspective while at the same time not having to go through the dramatic steps that a county name change typically would entail. Hollow gesture indeed!
