The Greek cruise ship 'Sea Diamond' sank off the Greek holiday island of Santorini Friday, after the vessel struck rocks and nearly 1,600 people on board had to be rescued. The Sea Diamond sank shortly before 7 a.m. (0400GMT), 15 hours after the accident occurred and the ship began listing and taking on water. A coast guard vessel patrols around the Greek-flagged cruise ship Sea Diamond sank as life boats and vests are seen at the Aegean island of Santorini, Greece, early Friday, April 6, 2007. Hundreds of vacationers, including dozens of students from the U.S. and Canada, were evacuated in a massive rescue effort from a Greek cruise ship after it struck rocks off the island of Santorini and began taking on water. The nearly 1,600 passengers and crew members climbed one-by-one down rope ladders to rescue vessels on Thursday, or crossed narrow gangways to board other ships

I thought modern ships have complete compartmentalization and ballasts of the hull to prevent sinking like this?
The hull must have been ripped pretty badly.

Maybe the showing of mental strength and self-confidence?
But in general I do agree with you. Members of not only irregular forces but also regular armies from Southwest Asia to Far East apparently like to play a lot with fire and explosives to demonstrate how tough they are. Or they drive a motorcycle with ten other fellas on it, or even better, those guys are also very often keen on eating snakes and raw rabbits...
