Few questions:

Is this pic avaible in hi-res?

Definitively not, because the picture is from the Deployment to Kosovo in 1999. I think these soldiers belong to an "Aufklärungs und Verbindungs Zug - AVZ" (Recce Platoon). Every batallion in the german Army has on of them.

OK, misleading.
I wanted to say that it can't be IdZ-Equipment because the picture is from 1999. But i also doubt that it shows KSK, as i said, i think these soldiers belong to an AVZ.
It's from a austrain-german excercise held in 2002 or 2003 somewhere in Austria.

In the picture released by EUCOM, SSG Jonathan Zapien, right, of the 3rd Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, receives the German "Ehrenmedaille" (Honor Medal) from German Chief of Staff, General Wolfgang Schneiderhan, in a ceremony at the German Ministry of Defense in Berlin Tuesday, Sept 12, 2006. Zapien was deployed to Afghanistan with the German Special Forces Command from June to October 2005 as a liason between the German unit and the U.S. contingent. The award is the highest honor the German army can give to a foreign soldier of SSG Zapien's rank. Among other task performed during the deployment, Zapien played a key part in saving the life of a German soldier by calling in ground and air medical support

It's not that I think he's fat, he's just really large (at least it seems so, unless the other guys are all around 5"5). If the 2nd largest guy is 5"10, he must be around 6"7, most probably more.

I´ve been wanting to post/link this for a long time. A Hundai/Suzuki dealer in my hometown...
I can´t figure out what THEY mean with the "KSK". Let´s just hope that they are huge fans of
"Kommando Spezialkräfte".
Sadly I´m not a huge fan of Hyundais or Suzukis....

does anyone know an estimate number of KSK troopers?Publicly available numbers indicate that the entire command has about 1100 positions, 400 of which reserved for combat operatives. Often-cited numbers from 2006 suggest that at least sixty percent of these are vacant.

My German is a little rusty but does that say:
"KSK marksmanship training center"
"sure to hit you!"
KSK-Schießausbildungszentrum
KSK shooting training center
Schön, Dich zu treffen!
Nice to hit* you!
*Note: the German verb 'treffen' means both "to meet" and "to hit".
It's very ironic.

the only pre-2000 photos i know of are those of the hostage rescue exersice where they used the black uniforms and were officially intruduced to the public. this was on September 1-12 1997. The exersice was called "Schneller Adler" (Fast Eagle)
