Aimpoints... was this pic taken just before the EOTech came in fashion ?

James
06-14-2012, 11:13 PM
Some units have been using aimpoints since the 1980s. Regardless, fashion has little to do with it. These guys are professionals and frequently aren't into whatever the newest, coolest thing is, unlike internet/range/airsoft commandos.

I've used the aimpoint M2 on deployment and have never had the issues so many people claim to have. Never lost zero, never broke the damned thing while on patrol or on mission, etc. I've since switched over to the ACOG because that's what the Army has given me to use in the environment we fight in now, but I would have no heartburn over going back to the Aimpoint if the need arose.

Sure, but I was speaking of "fashion" because on the photos taken at Tora Bora, all Delta use EOTechs. On the above picture, no EOTech, but the home-made forward grip and buttpad are similar to later photos, so I guess that this photo was taken only some years before.

the knife is the air force/para issued, it's used to cut ropes and slings, it was added after the iranian embassy siege where a soldier got burns after being "hung" by the rope near a flaming window. easy to find around the net.
if you mind check the knife thread there are pics and a bit of history.
can't help with the coverall suit btw.

30 Let URNA.

30 Years of URNA - Czech book about Police SWAT/HRT/Antiterrorists unit. Realy good book, but if I'm not mistaken, only in czech language.

1st page is photo from training excercise when Delta was in Czech Republic, in former military area Milovice, i guess in 2002. 2nd photo is when the URNA was in Ft. Bragg.

Written by Col. PhDr. Eduard Stehlik from Vojensky historicky ustav (Institute of Military History).

Same author wrote next very good book "Dum Spiro Spero" about 601st Special Forces Group.

Got to admit (as a motorcycle rider myself) I've always been puzzled as to the tactical value of a motorbike. The enemy can hear you long before they see you, you can't hear anything over the bike yourself, 99% of your attention is focussed on your riding and not on anything else around you, and if you get contacted there's a good chance you'll come off and hurt yourself even if you don't get shot. I can't think of any other vehicle I'd rather not be on/in when close to the enemy.

Some of the Gentlemen in the Unit had the black dye on the boots were removed. Probably , the original sole, toe cap, metal spike plate were also taken out by a boot man in town.. Different Vibram soles were re installed onto the boot, sometimes. Its been a long time since I have seen this.

Awesome Pics. TY.

I assume its about mobility in rough terrain rather than actual combat.

Some info on the above pics...

from the book, SPECWAROPS:

...US Army MH-60 Spec Ops helos work up counter aircraft hijacking techniques using the SASR's Aircraft Range facility. Note the helo's firepower - two M-134 7.62mm miniguns and an M-2 .50cal. The Jumbo replica was built over a few years and has had a number of paint jobs, initially residing at the SASR's CT training complex at Swanbourne...

also...

...At RAAF (Royal Australian Air Base) base Pearce, 35 kilometers to the north of Perth, in Western Australia, the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR), the Australian Special Forces, can put their counter-terrorism procedures to the test using a Boeing 747 mock-up.

The Jumbo (belonging to the fictional Emu Airlines) can be spotted from the satellite on a dedicated parking spot next to the runway 05 threshold, at the following coordinates: -31° 40′ 27.29″, +116° 0′ 40.07″.

With a contract awarded in 2010 the mock-up plane was updated with an “Extended Upper Deck” most probably required to give the 1:1 model an internal configuration similar to the interiors of the Airbus 380.

Airbus’s double deck wide-body was introduced into service by Australia’s flag carrier Qantas in October 2008 (with some early engine problems…), and is being progressively replacing the Boeing 747-400 across the airlines’s international network...

No, not quite true. It was mostly directed at everyone else....also not at his house.

Although, it IS the ultimate tactic... surround your enemies with such badassery - no-one can kill the metal.

Hey, that's my picture! I took that inside the Green Beret Club on Ft Bragg. In the same post where this picture came I also included a picture of OMFG D3LT4's memorial wall.
They renovated the club about a year or two ago but I haven't been back since. I'm out of the Army now so I have no real reason to visit but I keep meaning to, just to see what it looks like now. If I ever do I'll post pics. Maybe some Active Doody guy on the boards stationed on Bragg can take a look?

PS: I just noticed that I myself was quoted in the above post with the accompanying picture. Was it in this thread that I posted this pic? At 125 pages I don't even feel like looking for it myself. :D

Holy crap, damn Russians even got my picture as Patrick Starfish posing by the sign! Amazing how my pic has circulated. I didn't think they were interesting enough to leave the borders of MP.net. No idea who the gun belonged to, as there are four cards in the frame (Saddam plus Uday and Qusay, no idea who the fourth person is), but I'm willing to bet the owner's last name was "Hussein". I have more pics from inside the club, along with other interesting SOF-related pics, but seeing as how I probably have close to 100,000 pictures on my computer (most of them of my kid, hehe) it'd take me too much time and effort to locate them, unless I was really bored. Or you make me a cash offer.

I was curious what Billy Waugh looked like. A crapload of SOF-related books make mention or reference him as being the ultimate Special Operator and a "Godfather" of sorts, beginning in the 1950s during the Korean War and still fighting bad guys 50 years later in Afghanistan, as evidenced by that picture. I think it was in Pete Blaber's book (or maybe Dalton Fury's) where Delta operators unexpectedly run into Billy Waugh in Afghanistan. Despite being in his 70s and retired from both the CIA and the Army, he still showed up in a war zone a month after the 9/11 attacks ready to kill Taliban.

Interesting - we got L85s in 88, but we were still using M16s in the trees at that point, as were the gents from Hereford and Poole, and the environmental trials for the L85 were long over by then.

During one JRTC rotation, I got the "privilege" of infiltrating to the objective (a bridge) with the battalion scout platoon. At the time I was Stinger gunner, and we sent my team, and one other. W Each team, of two, was toting two Stingers (with attached miles gear), a full combat load, a PRC-77 Radio (we'd swith off every 1/2 hour), two spare batteries apiece, and a CLS bag. What should have been a 5K march in, turned into 12K after the trucks that were supposed to take us to the edge of a swamp got canceled, then the sky fell out, and we go "misoriented" in the dark. We spent 6 hours working our way through a damn swamp, and then still had to hit the bridge, set up a perimeter, and fend off two counter attacks, including one by an armored company. What fun. I slept for 14 hours when I finally got to bed.

Chaffee in 92. And trust me when I say there isn't much going on at Ft. Chaffee/Ft.Smith, Arkansas. Even the OPFOR stayed on Little Rock AFB, and flew in for training rotations. The AF CCT that set up the runway for our assault landing didn't exactly love the place either, and let us know it from the get go. But, I'll now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

I'll lay money that they all are

Regarding the different patterns i think it was because at the time they could do what they wanted.

It started off when TFB were the only Brits (bar the Defence Coy and diplomatic CP) working in Baghdad and elsewhere up north. They and the other low-profile types were issued 3 color deserts to blend in with the Yanks. Things gradually got more and more lax given the lack of grown-up oversight of TFB and the natural reaction of all British troops - which is to stick 2 fingers to the man, grow their hair and sideboards and wear as much non-issue kit as they can get away with. The so-called Tier 1 outfits all started wearing multicam at around the same time because Gen McChyrstal and our other friends from across the pond wanted as integrated as possible a set up in both Iraq and Afgh.

And maybe they are wearing the dpm to blend in with the Line unit in the background maybe? I'm sure Hereford etc wore Multicam before a lot of other countries did?

After the early days in Baghdad (and the initial move to Bagram when the shakies dressed as proper Marines) they never really bothered.

What's the sniper rifle with the wooden stock?

The large screw that appears to be on the side of the stock makes me think it's probably a Parker-Hale or another Mauser-based rifle. Not an L42.

If it is a PH, the Barrel looks too narrow for the heavy-barrel on the usual military M82 model though. M82 was the basis of the UK's L81 cadet training rifle (which the rifle in the picture wouldn't be at any rate) - both had their roots in the PH 1200TX target shooting rifle.

Could be an M81, or another PH model 1100 or 1200 based rifle.

I just finished watching "The Battle of the Black Sea" with Paul Howe. He contributed quite a few personal photos that I hadn't seen before - mainly Panama and Somalia. I thought it was worthwhile, though if you are only interested in @ss kicking and blood and guts you should probably pass - much of what he shares are his opinions on leadership, training, and preparedness, and how the lack of these things at various levels ended up making the mission more difficult than it might have been. He does talk quite a bit about the fighting itself, but only what he knew and saw at the time. As an example - he and his team didn't know that Sergeants Shugart and Gordon and the whole crew of Super 64 were missing until they'd gotten back to the base and started talking to other folks to try and figure out the big picture.

Funny how the PSD "uniform" hadn't changed since 1991. You could super-impose those photos on Gen Franks in 2001 and the only difference would be the haircuts and staches (well, that and Franks had MPs and not Delta).

This PSD attire is used since 1990 when Gen Schwarzkopf arrived in Saudi Arabia.

It's actually changed quite a bit. When I was doing that in Afghanistan (2004-2011) we might wear safari vests, but that was over the top of body armor and chest/belt rigs. An open safari vest is pretty much crap if you have to move - all the weight is at the bottom, it flops back and forth if you move at more than a moderate walking pace, etc. Put on a pair of cargo pants and put a few pounds in each thigh pocket, then try to run any distance. That's kind of how it is with a safari vest full of magazines, water, comms, and medkit. It's doable, but not that great.

Staches on the other hand are still 100% legit. I grew one over there that would put Magnum PI (my hero) to shame. I still have it.
