View Full Version : CIBUA role for Leopard C2? Anyone?

Hello

I read an article today concerning the upcoming replacement of the CF's Leopard C2s with the Stryker MGS. As I understand it the Leo C2 will be taken out of service completely. Although I know DND will do as it sees fit I believe that retiring our recently upgraded MBT is just a waste of a needed capability. It seems a bit late to lobby the government to cancel the purchase of the MGS.

What I propose is that the CF buy the MGS and use it in the peacekeeping/DFS role it is planning and keep the C2s specifically for urban combat. This way should a conflict break out the CF would still have the capability to fight in a urban area. Also they don't even have to be operational most of the time. They could simply sit in storage until they are needed or until they wish to train with them.

This question is mainly for the Canadian members of the board but anyone else's opinion would be appreciated. Do you think this would be a good idea? Also is there a petition on this subject?

There is a lot of dispute over whether the MGS is a viable system at all.

I highly doubt there is a petition for this, and if there is I highly doubt anybody at DND HQ cares.

This is a proposal for a Urban Combat Leopard Tank. It looks pretty cool. This would be instead of the Stryker.

Here's two concept photos.

I like the co-axial 40mm, very sexy.

Plus a link to an article about it.

Really cool photos I hadn't seen that before. I think its a great idea for the CF considering so much of the world will become urbanized in the next century.

Of course I didn't think anyone at NDHQ would care about any petition but I figure my MP being the defence minister "might". But that's a big might I guess.

I really hope someone up there is considering this idea.

Why not give it those 120mm twin mortars. AMOS, right?

I think that they would be rather unsuitable for urban warfare... p-)

but this Leo-Concept is kinda nice, as urban combat is getting more and more important.

Would mean heavily modifying the Front Armor which costs a lot. But keeping the old gun and cutting it is much cheaper and very easy.

How the hell are you supposed to transport them though...

MBT's... add the slate armour all over, etc.

Also the weight would be a problem, and that would effect speed and transport.

Just like every other MBT - by Ship and Train.

Interesting concept, could be a good route to go down, especially the mortar, a high velocity anti-tank weapon is less imperative in these days of Javelin and Spike, but good all round fire support is more so.
