I agree that this young Aussie was a bit angered with his approach to the topic of Islamic integration into Australian society, but isn't this a RANT thread?

all though he was a little blunt, there is no way in hell we should change any part of our ANZAC day celebrations so they feel better about still living in the stone age and not accepting there new county's customs and traditions.

He stepped over the line with his blanket comments about muslims.

It makes me hate religion and Muslims in general even more when I see storys about this. Not that I ever liked them in the first place.

It's obvious that he's got issues beyond ANZAC day.

On the other hand, that fact that a small minority of muslims have an issue with ANZAC day doesn't mean all or even most do.

Too bad campo overlooked that in his irrational rant.

RSL state president Doug Formby said they were wrong to associate Anzac Day with racism.

"Anzac Day is purely to recognise the deeds of our servicemen and women," Mr Formby said.

"No one is forced to attend and no one should take offence at a long-standing tradition in this country."

Dr Mohamad Abdalla, an imam at Brisbane's Kuraby Mosque and head of the Islamic Research Unit at Griffith University, agreed.

"Embracing events such as Anzac Day does not contradict Islamic teaching," Dr Abdalla said.

"Muslims have joined the Australian armed forces and received medals.

"Anzac Day events are not factors in inciting hatred. In fact, they can help Muslims and non-Muslims interact positively."

However, Dr Abdalla was unenthusiastic about some of the suggestions in the report, such as legislation "to prevent the media from inciting violence", compelling schools to teach Islamic history and the scheduling of exams around the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"It's not sufficient for Muslims to say others have to take action," he said.

"The onus is also on them to go out and engage with non-Muslims."

That's the link from his thread.

Personally I reckon Mustafa Kemal Atatürk put it best.

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives… you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets where they lie side by side here in this country of ours… You the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. Having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

Ironic, what with him being a muslim and all...

We have a school named in honor of ANZAC here. I as a muslim appreciate their help in curbing commies back in the day.

Yeah after reading his comments again he was a bit over-the-top.
If this holiday is seen as offensive to some Muslims then someone should educate them as to what this day really means.... when they were becoming citizens, did anyone sit them down and explain the national holidays of Australia? It seems like the best thing for these Muslims to do is to grab a pitcher of O'Douls and join the rest of the country. If they're not willing to at least consider joining in then they're probably not ready to be Australians. ...and if they seriously think there is a possibility of them being put into concentration camps the government should send some sort of social worker/educator to explain how things work in a 21st century democracy. It is bizarre that there could be such a misunderstanding over a national holiday.

Personally I reckon Mustafa Kemal Atatürk put it best.

He may have been Muslim BUT he was a true visionary. He knew where his countries future lay and that was with a forward looking, progressive western influence. Not with a backward inward looking movement that has come to stifle any and all inovation various crack pots dont believe in.

In fact what Muslims should be doing is using Ataturk as a true hero figure...not these terrorists who detonate or incite others to detonate in public places etc.

The muslim world needs more visionary's like Ataturk.

I have always wanted to go there ever since seeing the movie Gallipoli as a kid. I know lame excuse but I became obsessed with everything ANZAC for quite some time.

Hell its probably the reason I became an SMLE whore.

A young bloke from home just knocked back the chance to go to the service on the 25th. He was in Egypt on holidays doing the back packing thing and it would have meant staying in the area for another 2 weeks, but he needed to go back to the UK for a comfy bed.....

I'm not bitter. :|

The Turks have been very good to the Aussies about helping us improve the area as a memorial and giving access to it and so on for tourists.

To be honest, I'd probably rather be there at the other end of the year, when it is deserted and not filled with drunken lunatics. But then the service would be good too.
