A very good read.

Are you looking for specific unit histories or just a general overview?

Some of the best works are out of print and quite expensive.

The shelves are groaning under the weight of books written to be honest.

The Waffen SS: Hitler's Elite Guard at War, 1939-45 by George H. Stein gives a good overview and makes a decent first read on the subject, imho
edit: oh, already posted in Crassus' list

Leon DeGrelle's "Campaign in Russia" is a good narrative of the Wallonian brigade's actions on the Eastern Front. They were attached to 5th SS "Wiking" during much of the fighting, especially during the hell of the Cherkassy/Korsun Pocket.
I also strongly recommend "Black Edelweiss" (I forgot the author's name), the memoirs of a Waffen SS soldier who reflects on his service, the comradere, and the guilt of being associated with the Nazis.
Finally, any of the books written by Michael Reynolds: "The Devil's Adjutant: Joachim Pieper", as well as his books about the 1st SS Panzer Korps (Liebstandarte AH and Hitlerjugend) and "Sons of the Reich" (about Hohenstaufen & Frundsberg).
Gordon Williamson's books are really good, especially for readers who are previously unfamiliar with the Waffen SS.

Anything i just want to read German army books about ww2.

Well...that's quite an undertaking.

The scope and scale of the conflict is naturally vast, i would recommend you attempt to find a theatre of war that interests you the most.Once you have defined that interest all the pieces will fall into place.

Initially as a primer i would recommend virtually all the works of UK author James Lucas many of which have been republished in recent years in affordable volumes.

World war two through German eyes
Last Year of the Reich
Storming Eagles
Kommando
Alpine Elite
War in the Desert
Panzer Grenadiers
Grossdeutschland
Das ReichEqually as a starter, i would also suggest the works of Paul Carell...this is a qualified statement however as he was a commited National Socialist ( his real name is Paul Karl Schmidt, member of the Allgemeine SS and responsible for the German Foreign Ministry news and press division) who reinvented himself as an author.

Readable and interesting, but not 100% objective.

'Stalingrad: The Defeat of the German 6th Army', Schiffer Military History, 1993
'Hitler's War on Russia', volume 2 Scorched Earth London: Harrap, 1970
'Hitler Moves East', 1941-1943: 1964
'Invasion! They're Coming!' New York: Dutton, 1963
'Foxes of the Desert' New York: Bantam, 1960 For the last years of the war i recommend virtually everything published by Helion Books,a Uk publisher that translates into English the finest histories that are published in Europe. i wholeheartedly recommend the following:

Last laurels:the German defence of Upper Silesia January-May 1945
In a raging inferno: Combat units of the Hitler youth 1944-45
Hitlers last levy:The Volksturm 1944-45
For the homeland! :History of the 31st Waffen SS Volunteer division ( interesting study of ethnic Germans living in Hungary)
To Battle: History of the Galician Waffen SS division
For Rex and for Belgium ( Leon Degrelle and the Legion Wallonie. (Degrelles own published memoires are not entirely objective.)
Pour L'Europe (the best English language history of the French Volunteers in the service of the Germans.)All can be found here:
http://www.helion.co.uk/

Another good UK seller of miltary history can be found here:

As i mentioned the scope is massive, good luck!

"SS and Gestapo: Rule by Terror" by Roger Manvell, and "Waffen SS: The Asphalt Soldiers" by well repected military historian John Keegan.

These volumes were published in the 1970s by Ballantines in the UK and North America. They provide good general overviews of the history, organization and structure, and wartime activities of these organizations.

German Infantry Aces by Franz Kurowski is great, especially if you love small unit actions. Most of the stories are about the Eastern Front as well. Some insane stuff in there (like understrength squads repulsing repeated battalion-level day and night attacks for several days).

Don’t forget the books written by the SS Generals e.g. Kurt ‘Panzer’ Meyer’s book Grenadiers. Heinz Guderian’s Achtung-Panzer & Panzer Leader are also good reads.

Also don’t forget to read about Wilhelm 'Willi' Bittrich.

While I just started reading Devil's Guard, and its a great book. I got it from my school. I looked online to see how much its worth, cause I want to buy it. The cheapest one is $100.00, so if any one has a copy its worth some money.
