SYDNEY, Australia (*******) -- A koala population explosion on an Australian island has prompted calls for 20,000 of the furry, native marsupials to be shot to stop them destroying their island habitat and end a koala famine.

Some 30,000 koalas on Kangaroo Island, off the coast of the state of South Australia, are stripping the island of its native gum trees, destroying the ecosystem and causing a koala famine, say environmentalists and national parks officials.

"We are talking thousands of starving koalas," said Sandra Kanck from the Australian Democrats, Australia's third major political party.

"While they may be cute and cuddly we need to get beyond emotion to reality...my suggestion is professional shooters do it quickly and cleanly," Kanck told ******* on Friday of the proposed cull.

The South Australian state government has rejected calls for a cull, preferring sterilization and relocation.

The Australian Koala Foundation also opposes a cull of the koalas, which on the Australian mainland are struggling to survive as urban development destroys their habitat.

Kangaroo Island tourist operators say a koala cull would severely damage the island's tourist industry.

"The koalas are so hungry they are eating pine needles," said Kanck. "What will tourists think of a habitat of de****d trees with desperate, starving koalas roaming the damaged landscape?"

Nooo. Koalas are so cute and cuddly. Do you think I could come to Australia and adopt some as peta? We Hvae plenty of Euclyptes tress where I live. :)

Shoot them? :( What a waste. Why don't they export them (Koalas) as exotic pets? I'll buy one.

Bring them to the U.S., I wouldn't mind having Koalas living in my trees.

Just think of them as cuddly terrorists that have to beaten to death with rubber dildos - death by perversion!

Contrary to popular beliefs, koalas are not cute n cuddly. They possess razor sharp claws and are only calm while eating eucalyptus, which gives the koala a sort of high. Catch one when there on their down and your in for a hurting.

I can personally testify to the fact. A baby koala feel out of a tree once and my father went to pick it up and place t back in the tree, the little devil was all claws and fur, the old man needed stitches after that encounter!

Good ol'e killer drop bears. :D I'm not sure as to why they must be shot, an incredible waste it seems. Why not as other mentioned ship them to the mainland. Create a habitat for them away from any urban development large enough to cater for such a large number. Killing thousands just doesnt seem justifiable when there are better solutions.

At least they are thriving on KI, they are having a pretty bad time in other areas as urban sprawl takes over their habitat.
If the little buggers are starving they have to be either relocated (they should donate half a dozen to every zoo in the world) or culled. I think they are a bit fussy about what they eat so they may have to be culled :( .
