The best F27 in the world, the icelandic coast guard TF-SYN, which has single handedly discovered scores of various modern submarines, without the use of sonar...
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/P-3C_157319_LK319-1_024.jpg
A P-3 Orion over the westest part of Europe, which incidently is also on the west part of Iceland.(north west part actually, but still most westest part though)
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/TF-SIF_1_1000.jpg
An Aerospatiale Dauphin about to crash...
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/TF-SIF_a2_1000.jpg
No I was lying, it didn't crash. Thats only because the pilots onboard are the best Aerospatiale Daupin pilots in the world, which is no lie.
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/P3C_LK319_a_vestf_024.jpg
A P-3 Orion, it landed safely afterwards I'm told...
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/HH-60_Fossv_024.jpg
American HH-60G in front of the Reykjavik-city-Hospital (Borgarspítalinn) with some injured individual.
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/HH-60_Heng2_024.jpg
An HH-60G displaying the fact it can bank a little. Which is very useful in hilly terrain, or any terrain for that matter...
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/MIG29_2902_024.jpg
A naz... I mean german MiG-29 taking off from Keflavik airbase, heading for the United States, as they often do.
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/F-15C_LN_86-160_024.jpg
One of the four F-15s that are "supposed" to be stationed here in Iceland, although I haven't seen one in a while.. so I can't be sure if they are actually still here.
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/B5250024.jpg
A B-52. It had to use the runways to taxi around, it is far too heavy for the taxiways.
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/f16-no-282-024.jpg
One of those Norweigian F-16s landing in Keflavik.
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/f1656024.jpg
A Duch F-16 doing evasive manuevres above Keflavik airport, these are supposed to help defend Iceland in case the Faroese invade us..
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/su27-1-024.jpg
One of the two Ukrainian Su-27s that visited Iceland sometime ago, this one is a UB(Su-27UB that is). The fuel lines here didn't fit the Sukhois so we had to do some scratchbuilding to make them fit...
http://www.verslo.is/baldur/640/c17-1-640.jpg
A C-17 that practically crashed when it delivered an american celebrety to the Vestmanneyjar (Westman Islands). That celebrety is actually food, called Keiko, I mean a killer whale called Keiko, who was supposed to live out the rest of his life in Iceland, chasing Killer whale chicks and something, but he chose to go to Norway, and got killed of course. (you know what a killer whale is don't you?)
Actually back in the 60s and 70s the Icelandic government ordered the Orions based here to bomb some Killer whale packs with depth charges. Lots of dead killer whales and blood on the ocean were the result of that.
http://www.usatoday.com/life/gallery/animal-actors/keiko.jpg
Ye thats the bloddy whale I'm talking about, evil thingy...

So Iceland has the F27 too ? Excellent, since that thing is also in use here in Finland.

I don't know about the various roles of this aircraft for our defence forces, but at least it's used to drop the paratroops on training and it will be used in real situation as well, probably.

Ours is used for long range maritime reconnaissance, transport and perhaps last dich kamikaze attack...

Nice to get some artistic F-15s here.
So the Lakenheath ones will go (if they haven't already), where are these stylized hawk ones from?
-- Just looked in another topic and found out. So if you are coming to Iceland I'll have to give the typical Icelandic greeting to foreigners who visit us. " How do you like Iceland so far... and uhh Welcome to Iceland." in this order and usually omitting the last part.

<---------- I'm a bit proud here, the F27 is a Dutch plane...
This is the one our Airforce is flying. It's the F60, let's say a newer version of the F27, and especially for military use.... The F50, which is almost similar to the F60 is the version for civilian use.

Btw, the F60 is used for transport (personel and cargo) and to drop para's. I jumped three times out of the U-02 (the one with the flares)

The Fokker F-27 has also been used by the Finnish state-owned civilian Finnair,
of what I found on the net Finnair´s Fokkers were obviously bought from Iceland
as well. Given the huge (not) amount of these aircrafts in the Finnish Air Force I
assume that Finnair would in case of war have to give away some of its planes to
the Air Force, Finnair obviously doesn´t operate F-27´s anymore, but there are
probably some other smaller daughter companies to Finnair that does have those,
or atleast similar (sime size, layout etc). Such as the ATR 72
http://en.wikipedia.org/upload/9/9a/Atr-72.bristol.2.750pix.jpg
ATR 72, that Finnair operates, as well as Kar Air and so forth.

3 F-27M Maritime is operated by Spanish Air Force from Gando Air Base in Gran Canaria (Canary Island) in SAR roles.

Yea.. Iceland is the best country in the world as we always say... at least we have the biggest glacier in Europe, More landmass than Denmark, unless you count Greenland as Denmark too... More people than on Jan Mayen.. Almost no trees to block the view, this http://www.lh.is/Img/Headermyndir/haspennulina_bottom.gif instead.. and in summertime its day all day long, that is also when it is supposed to be night... so people can play golf in 2:00am without the use of Nightvision goggles... but in winter it might be good to have NVGs to get to school or work early in the morning...
http://home.onego.ru/~alkonost/reykjavik.1.jpg Somewhat Nice architecture and I'm not yet very bored with this scenery although I've been forced to see this every day for many years... and by the way its not the ocean, its just a small pond in the middle of the city or more accurately middle of the oldest part of the city, not real center of it....
Nice pics Bloddyaxe, can you post photos of sexy Icelandic ladies.
ehh...

These three won some beautycontest, although I never agree with the judges of these contests... and the cutest lasses never seem to take part in them... so guess wich one of these won,...(that is first place...)
http://www.missiceland.is/ungfruisland/myndir/vestfj/vestfj04a.jpg
And these won a similar contest, but in a more insane part of the country...
Yepp great pics, by the way, whats the population in Iceland...?
Iceland has a population of merely 288000. But if we add up all the sheep and horses and pigs, we are more like 1300000...
Actually Iceland has had people in Iraq also, two EOD guys were attached to the Danish contigent in Al Quarnah.

Yeah but you didn't cook and eat him as it is supposed. Or at least freeze him and deliver to hungry african children... :( :)

Actually there was a parliament member who suggested doing just that. Mr. Steinar Bastesten of the "Coastal Party".
The same guy who was stopped in US customs when wearing a seal skin vest, but they let him through when he explained to the customs officials that if they took his vest he would have to kill another cute seal pup when he got back home to replace the vest. Or so the story goes...

bloddyaxe

And how big is your Army (excluding pigs, sheeps and horses )?
Iceland doesn't have an army of its own. There are many reasons for it.
We got semi- independence from Denmark 1918, and the Danish army was then still our army after that, and the Danish king our king as well.
In 1940 the Danish army didn't even bother to defend Denmark and so we lost that army before the British invaded us the same year, and in 1944 when we got ourselves full independence, we still had allied troops.
Since then we have always had American soldiers in Iceland, except for one year when most of them left, and then came back the year after.
So the government didn't see the point in wasting money on a military, especially since it was extremely good ad wasting the money on everything else.
One of our modern politicians though is really interested in having a Icelandic army...
http://www.bjorn.is/media/skjalasafn/skraut/fors-mynd.jpg
Thats the guy.. He wants a battallion of soldiers or 500 troops to protect Iceland, of course that isn't enough, so he wants the americans to stay as well. However, they seem to want to go, probably since they don't care any longer for russian subs in the "GIUK gap."
We by the way, have more than enough money for that battallion, so its mostly pacifist tendancies in all political parties, except the Ultra-nationalist Independence party, which are against it.
Iceland has however 130 man Coast guard and a 50 man police anti-terrorist unit.
http://safn.mbl.is/myndasafn/127/100x100/MBL0078077.jpg
And then we've got the 5000 man american "Iceland Defence Force." But they are downsizing all the time, and might be as few as maybe 3000 now or perhaps less. They have for example to spare 200 million ISKr, which is about 3 million $, this year. And they've been fireing most of their Icelandic support workers, all except the fire team and their public realations guy. Luckily however, they cannot take the airfield with them, if they leave.
And I almost forgot, we have also a "Peace keeping force" which is fairly new. These are the guys who operated Pristina airbase in Kosovo, and are supposed to operate Bagram airbase in Kabul. The number of people in that force is quite fluid, but they might be 50-200 people all in all..
They are civilians who are trained for slight combat by our anti-terrorist unit. And now also by the Norwegian army for that Afganistan thing.
And then, both the Norwegian and Danish armies have considerable amount of Icelanders in them..
