This shows it very clearly:

It seems that most of the damage was done by a blast wave...

So this train was not on the main track but on the side track close to buildings...?

Anyway train filed with fertiizer( saltpeper) and second one with fuel... gives you hundereds toons of explosive mix in case of accident... almost a tactical nuke power...

RIP :(

I heard the train was full of Dynamite for use in Mining?

Wow. The damage extends off the picture. I hope that the area around the rail was industrial.

If they had mixed residential in there many people lost there lives or were seriously injured.

Very bad.

AFAIK it was a train with fertilizer and second one with fuel which crashed together.... I dont know if you even tried to mix this two things but it is reraly nasty thing... this mix was used some times ago as an explosive in construction works...

But you have to mix stuff like that before detonting. And it has to be mixed very well before using.

"Nice pics", surely did lots of damage... :(

Didn't the train collide together?

HELEX

No, the Dynamite train got contact to the High Voltage Lines making a short circuit to the ground and it started the Explosion.

Thats what I think was the most likely of the different media Stories.

Colliding fuel and fertilizer train would make a nice fire, but no detonation like this.

Most N.Korea tracks are made in Russia.

perhaps shock wave going out, then in again?

???!!!??? IMPLOSION ?

Dont forget the explosion was above these tracks, and after the expansion of gases the shockwave goes the opposite direction back from where it came.

One train was acarrying ammonium nitrate, a common fertiliser. You'd think fertiliser+fuel=boom, but not so in this case. A mixture of ammonium nitrate and petrol requires a proper detonator to set the fertiliser off. You could burn it, the petrol in the mixture would burn off, the fertiliser would do nothing. Had there been a detonator, or some other form of detonation providing a shockwave, it'd off gone off otherwise it wouldnt have.

Well one of trains struck a power line... so let's say it was a kind of electrical detonator. And AFAIK fertilizer can explode even without fuel but it is extremaly hard to do so but if it was sealed in train cars then...

You know when you short circut power cable there is imediatelly melted metal which is very hot so maybe it acted as a detonator?

Doubtful. Don't think I don't know what I'm on about btw, I live on a farm and we have tested alot of this for safety reasons. We have also used fuel/fertlisier mixtures for removing large boulders/tree stumps, etc. Very effective in even small doses.

So was this some kind of freak accident? I didn't hear anything abotu this until now. Looks like it was an incredible explosion judging by the pictures.

You don't know how hard it is to get ANFO detonating.
You don't need just a detonator you also need a large powerfull booster charge to set it off.

I tryed 1g Bleiazid (blei = lead) and a few g of Pentaerythrittritoltetranitrat and it didn't work.
