BEIJING, May 1 (Xinhuanet) -- The Chinese, who launched their first astronaut into space last year, are "shocked" the United States has not welcomed them into the tight-knit community of space-faring nations, a leading U.S. expert said on Tuesday, urging the U.S to cooperate with China.

Joan Johnson-Freese, who chairs the National Security Decision Making Department at the U.S. Naval War College, said one space official she met on a recent trip to China was very emotional as he asked for U.S. recognition and cooperation.

"They are shocked that the U.S. is not reaching out to them. They want very much to work with the United States," she said.

The Chinese went so far as to build a docking ring onto their Shenzhou spacecraft that would allow it to park at the $95 billion International Space Station, said Johnson-Freese.

Their launch complex in Inner Mongolia is on the same parallel as NASA's Kennedy Space Center, which would allow them to share an orbit with the ISS.

Johnson-Freese was a featured speaker at the 41st Space Congress in Cape Canaveral.

After the Chinese became the third nation after the former Soviet Union and the United States to launch a human into space last October, they expected Washington to become more open.

That expectation ran into a wall of U.S. suspicion that the Chinese program, which is under military control, could someday pose a threat to the U.S. domination in satellites used for military communications, reconnaissance and tracking.

But where the United States is reluctant, others will not be, Johnson-Freeze said.

"The Europeans are eager to work with them," she said. China is already participating in the European Union's Galileo constellation, a rival to the U.S. Global Positioning System.

"The rest of the world clearly sees the U.S. as space dominant. This scares a lot of other countries. They see us as having the sword and the shield," said Johnson-Freese.

Many experts in Europe and the United States doubt the Chinese are capable in the short term of competing with the United States in space, although both nations have stated goals of building moon bases and continuing on to Mars.

But Johnson-Freese warned that if the U.S. falters, the nation could undergo something similar to the "Sputnik shock" experienced after the Soviets became the first to launch a satellite into Earth orbit.

"What if, in 10 years, the Chinese are on their way to the moon and the U.S. effort is diminishing. Would that be acceptable to the U.S. public? I don't think so," she said.

Know what's funny is that all you "mature" folks haven't even really discussed this topic. You all just keep taking stabs at each other.

GOOD JOB! :P

BTW, I dislike China. Communist China, that is! Their government is not to my liking, like that matters.

Oh well. It would be funny to see a Chinese spacecraft fly over, cause you could look through your telescope at it. On the bottom, there'd be a big oval, golden sticker "MADE IN CHINA". rofl

Agree with you on that. But I get pissed when budanski comes with his smart-ass comments about Europeans.

To be honest; I don't care who flies out in space. And I don't care if China feel left out of the good party. Hell, they probably want to come in just to try to steal some technology.

Good point. China kinda uhum *COUGH*frigginSTOLEOURNUCLEARSHIZNITintel*COUGH* a few years back. I must have a cold.

What with the crash of that damn Y8 Finback fighter into our EP-3 Orion ELINT plane, I don't like China. Taiwan is alright in my book, but mainland PRC? No thank you. You guys can keep your damn pandas, and we'll keep our nuclear technologies.

I am an arrogent American. Well, Goddamnit, it's well founded. (Unless Kerry gets the office.)

So, do most American's see China as a Semi-Communist rival?

I have never looked at China that way, i'm more interested in how it is doing economically, and as J-10 said their economy is growing fast :) . I've always been pretty fascinated with traditional Chinese culture also :D .

I don't know if arrogance is the word I would use to describe the US's wariness of a space-capable China. I think the word I would use would in fact be "wariness." However, I would also say that perhaps there is merit to working with China in space, so that we can more fully gain a feel for their capabilities and intentions. Perhaps the information we would gain on them was weighed against the information they would gain on us, and it was determined that China would gain more.

Have a good one all, and just some thoughts...

Do we really want a super power in the world who still has banned religion and whose citizens only have access to state controlled media outlets. Look at what they did to the Falung Gong followers (Sp?) in the late 90's and at Tiananmen Square in the late 80's. China, asides from Hong Kong and maybe Beijing and Shanghai, is still very much Communist. I do not mind them branching out and reaching out, like with the Olympics, the space program, and other liberal laws they've passed. But it is still not enough and they still have a lot of "growing up" to do.

The funny thing is, is that most of China's economic growth and current technology is from the US.

That is because American business need cheap workers for getting more money to their CEO's. China seems to be a giant slave market if you ask me.

It's called globalism. I don't see you whining when a few friends of mine lost their 100K tech jobs to India and China so some Indian and Chinese workers earn money and pay for their 3rd house and 5th car. A big thank to job outsourcing.

p.s I called Netgear the other day to RMA my router. I had to talk to a heavily accent Indian dude in India who took away a job from an American. Globalism goes both way.

It is also called economic development. The theory is, is that if China grows rich it will also grow in freedoms and tollerance. There is a specific term for it and it seems the US planned it out in the 60's or something. I read about it in a book, but really do not remember much about it.

I wount call it globalism. I call it greedalism. How much money do a CEO really need to earn each year before he/she is satisfied? When he/she is able to buy Brasil on a months salary?
The greediness of some people make my stomach turn, I find it revolting.

Capitalism is greedy, so what else is new? Would you rather live in a socialist/communist country then? I mean, they take your hard-earned money and give it to some slackers. Hell, I'll donate money to buy a plane ticket for you to Cuba if you wish.

I have lived in a socialist country all my life. And I FRIGGIN love it!!!
I have NO bad feelings about sharing my money with those in more need than I through a little high taxes.(36% in my case.)

And yes jack. I would LOVE to go to Cuba. So I just PM you my account number, so you can tranfer money right away.
I always wanted to have a little chat with my commerade Fidel. And I'm not joking there, I can tell you.

Norway is a socialist country, since when? Sure, they have socialized health care, but their economy is as capitalism as you can get.

Speaking of capitalism, I'm looking to buy a new SUV to fulfill my dream to become a capitalistic pig yank. Any suggestion for a good SUV?
