Hello guys,

I'm IC of my Sqn's team in a cadet competition next week-end in commemoration of the Falklands conflict (odly named "The Falklands competition") in hope of going through onto a tri-service competition with the army and navy cadets. A part of the Falklands competition is a small part on our ORPs (Operational Ration Packs) and we need to know the breakdown of our packs in calories, not just overall but how many calories in each meal sort of thing. I've searched google and the gear forum but didn't come up with anything of much use and so I'm asking upon your knowledge.

Is it just an obvious case of just looking on the bloody packets of everything, if so I apolagise as I don't have any to hand to check, but I will do tommorow night if that is the case.

Thanks alot

All menus contain the same amount of calories - which if all contents (whitener, sugar, etc) is eaten in 24 hours gives you twice your RDA of calories. (I think)

Apparently they're not massively calorie rich. A medic mate of mine was given the lowdown about them, and they supply you with more than the normal daily requirements, but they're not high tech at all. It's just cheap stuff that they reckon squaddies will eat. Mainly it's just bulk to make you full.

along time ago when i was at cic catterrick my training corporal told us that 24hr rat pack contained 4000 calories in a pack if that's any use

That's probably about right. The average bloke needs around 3000 calories a day. So for moderate/severe training (as on exercise etc) 4000 calories is about right. I still cant eat everything in on though, just too filling!

I made a point before getting out of eating everything lol

But normally would just take out what you eat that way you are carrying around loads of rubbish or useless stuff. Arctic rations were always nice from what i can remember.

The arctic packs were reckoned to have 6000 calories in them.

You want to read pages 1201-1208, of Chapter 12, of JSP 456 Volume 2, The Defence Catering Manual. Sadly, I don't have a copy to hand.

Google is your friend...

The ORP range consists of seven menus and provides sufficient calories and nutritional balance to provide a Service person with sufficient food for one day in the field. An average calorific intake for the complete range is 3,800 calories per ration. Each menu has a breakfast (400 cals), a snack lunch (1,750 cals) and a dinner (1,000 cals) plus sufficient sundry items (650 cals) ie tea, coffee and squash powder to provide variety and minimise fatigue. The ration is designed to be eaten either hot or cold, but ideally is used in conjunction with the hexamine solid fuel cooker, as the food is more appetising if it is heated. The ORP range also provides for ethnic feeding (Halal, Sikh/Hindu) and for vegetarians. The calorific content for these rations is similar to the general purpose range.

Good knowledge.

Disturbing, but good.
