Maccabi TA beat Skipper Bologna in Euroleague final

Maccabi Tel Aviv overwhelmingly beat Italian team Skipper Bologna with a final score of 118-74 in Saturday night's Euroleague championship final against at the Nokia Arena (Yad Eliyahu) in Tel Aviv.

The game began at around 9:45 P.M., following a consolation round of the Final Four between CSKA Moscow and Siena at 7:10 P.M. Both games were broadcast live on Channel 1, with some 10,000 spectators watching from the stands at Yad Eliyahu.

Maccabi is vying for its fourth Euroleague cup, following previous wins in 1977, 1981 and 2001.

Maccabi and Skipper were scheduled to hold training sessions at the Nokia Arena on Saturday morning, Army Radio reported.

Pini Gershon, Maccabi's coach, said that both teams had good offensive tools. "The crowd yesterday watched for great teams," he added.

"Pressure exists, but that's the same for Skipper, but our advantage is that we've been there before, experience is more important than the home advantage," Gershon said.

Skipper coach Jasmin Repesa also mentioned his players' inexperience: "I have a young team. 11 of our players are in the Final Four for the first team." He said his team's advantage was the lack of pressure. "The home crowd doesn't intimidate me - we've won this year in front of this crowd," Repesa added.

Earlier, CSKA Moscow rallied in the Euroleague Final Four consolation game to defeat Montepaschi Siena 97-94 for third place, with point guard Marcus Brown leading the way with 27 points.

Maccabi defeats CSKA Moscow 93-85
Maccabi survived a shaky start Thursday night to defeat CSKA Moscow 93-85 and win a chance to meet Skipper Bologna in the Final Four championship game.

Bologna gained a ticket to the final game with a closely fought 103-102 over Italian rival Montepaschi Siena earlier in the evening.

In its most important game of the season, Maccabi demonstrated sound basketball fundamentals and strong defense to overcome an early 11-point deficit.

Maccabi, playing before an excited home crowd at Nokia Arena, controlled the borders and converted 12 offensive rebounds for 14 points. Maccabi also stole the ball from the Russian team 12 times, but did not take full advantage of these quick hands, missing some easy shots.

Maccabi didn't let up after CSKA surged to a 34-23 lead after the first 13 minutes. Coach Pini Gershon made efficient use of his bench, while CKSA coach Dusan Ivcovic left Marcus Brown on the court too long, allowing him to rack up his third foul early in the second half.

While Maccabi's substitutes contributed just 18 points and 6 rebounds, these came at crucial times. David Bluthenthal (4 of 4 from the field) picked Maccabi up twice and Gur Shelef helped the team move the ball, as well as making some wise fouls.

Anthony Parker was Maccabi's offensive leader, especially during the first half. He finished the game with 27 points, including a pair of alley-oop dunks in the third quarter that ignited the crowd.

Coming back from halftime one point down, Maccabi opened up a seven-point lead by the end of the third quarter and maintained at least a five-point advantage for the rest of the game. Tal Burstein's three-pointer with 2:30 gave Maccabi a comfortable 12-point lead, 80-68, and effectively put the game out of reach.

Sarunas Jasikevicius scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and played a smart game, handing out six assists and stealing the ball seven times. He was steady at the foul line, pouring in 10 points of his 18 points after being fouled.

Nikola Vujcic added 14 more for Maccabi and Maceo Baston recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Marcus Brown was top scorer for CSKA with 23; J.R. Holden added 16, Victor Alexander 12 and Sergei Monya 10. Mirsad Turkcan also had a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds for CSKA.

Futhermore, its only basketball, so who gives? Not me at least.. ;)

Yeah...... just like i tought it was... Nokia arena cause WE SPONSOR the team...

for which Tel Aviv recently found a new sponsor, Nokia, in order to further expand and modernize the facility. The venue will be called "Nokia Arena" for at least the next decade, and in less than a season, the name has caught on already among basketball fans, proving that even after 41 years, quick adaptability suits both the place and its inhabitants.

Wrong.

The team is sponsored by an Israeli firm. The "Nokia" is paying the arena for the name.

(The team is called "Maccabi ELITE TelAviv" - ELITE is the name...

Futhermore, its only basketball, so who gives? Not me at least.. ;)well its not really a matter of basketball for IMO that’s a great sport, but rather its only the Eurolegue and yeah like you say, who gives? p-)

Here I repeat from the other similar thread.
Yep we rule :D

Though indeed for once I kind of agree with some of the Euros here and thier non excitment ;) I mean it was only the Euroleague after all p-)

But still a great win

Champions of Europe..haha  :D

Shalom :D

As for Nokia, yeah like C-K explained, they don’t sponsor the team, they paid millions to have their name on the arena because that arena is now THE premier basketball arena of any nations that plays in that legue (which is almost all of Europe) and they want to pay millions to be associated with it.

But of course no one in Europe cares, right? …. hmm ;) , yeah that’s why Nokia spent millions to have their name on it because of course no one in Europe cares  ;)

Do you realize that the majority shareholders in Nokia Corp. are American pension funds? Stop babbling about "us sponsoring" if you don't happen to be a Nokia Corp. executive and be glad that the company obviously has good marketing people in Israel.

Uninen,

You are showing narrow vision and a small heart, not letting our Israeli members rejoice about a sporting triumph in otherwise troubled times. Furthermore, you identify yourself with an international corporation whose Finnish executives are known for their pro-American stance. Who are you to speak on their behalf?

And what comes to the NOKIA, well NOKIA ows it all it has or will ever have to Finland the nation and the Finnish people that work there now or have worked in the past.

Futhermore, it used to be government business..... so without the people and the nation, NOKIA wouldnt have ever happened. :|

Uninen,

Are you just naiive or don't you have any work experience? Companies like Nokia Corp. are doing their R&D in China, India and Korea, design in California, manufacturing all over the world and get their financing from London and New York. And their main market is certainly not your home country.

To quote former Sony chairman Akio Morita "Think globally, act locally". Stop that nationalistic BS and wake up to reality. And let Nokia Corp. sponsor Israeli basketball, they know better than you.

I have to admit I am a bit surprised at duck defending Israel here but oh well….Anyways good postings, especially your point on where Nokia does its R&D and its design etc…..(so true indeed :D )

Just one little correction….

And let Nokia Corp. sponsor Israeli basketball They didn’t sponsor any Israeli team or Israeli basketball per say but rather just had its name on the premier basketball arena of the premier basketball team in that Euroleague which is in Israel.

I know I am nitpicking here but hey I am just trying to clear it up.

To Uninen

As for your lame insistence that basketball doesn’t interest anyone in Europe, well that’s just not true, I mean of course Football is by far the dominant sport, but basketball certainly has interest amongst many Europeans, I mean hell that’s why Nokia spent millions to simply put their name on the premier basketball arena of the Euroleague.

Yeah no one in Europe Cares

You see its like this, Israel is a very small country, now of course Nokia does have a market in Israel, however IMO its too small of a market to warrant the cost of a arena sponsorship just for the small market of Israel and as such is obvious its not just for Israel but for a larger EUROPEAN audience and being that indeed like I said before, that arena is THE premier basketball arena in the Euroleague and it now hosts again the premier and best basketball team in that league, well trust me if no one in Europe didn’t care about basketball as you so falsely stated, then I can assure you Nokia wouldn’t have spent the amount they did on putting its name on that arena.

Unless of course you think Nokia is a stupid company that doesn’t know what the heck it’s doing. Which its clear that you institute as such by saying that Basketball doesn’t interest anyone for that makes Nokia’s sponsorships look pretty stupid if indeed that were true.

But of course it’s like what duck said, “they know better than you” and thank god for that and believe me that’s good as well for the company that was founded in your nation.

I know I got carried away and in truth like I said before, I as well don’t care that much about this (I mean its ONLY the Euroleague p-) ), but Uninen here and his comments have made this thread so much fun, that hey I am starting to somewhat care :D (well not really but just for this thread………….Go Maccabi, champions and the best in Europe woot  ).

There isn't much of a legue in Israel...maybe 3-5 teams (not many areanas)

When I started "playing" there were only 4 teams. (Metulla, Bat-Yam, Haifa and Ramat-Gan)

My first game was without gear at all  (I think I almost died that day...)

This is all I could find...I'll try to look for some more + maybe I'll find some of my old pictures.

http://www.icerink.co.za/hockey/ihwc_team_isr.htm

We even had a girl on our team! a beautiful blond (American) which was our "secret weapon" (other teams were very careful not to hurt her)

Our more serious games were against soldiors from the U.N. (they had their own "U.N" hockey team)

It seems that the Israeli national team has many "Sergei" and names like that,
I guess many of the players are Russian immigrants, or atleast can gain from the
experience of these. Russian hockey players are good, they lost to USA yesterday
in the world championships, but it was a good game, they could just as well have won.

But thank God for Suomen Leijonat (the Finnish lions :) )

1992 was a very cold winter in Israel and the roof of our rink broke down, so we played "out side" until the summer came... (so it was kinda like playing on a frozen lake)
