VBSS exercise with Force Recon Marines on 9 December 1999. The pilot came in too low and too fast, got hooked on the edge, and flipped over. Of the 18 on board, 7 were killed in the crash.

U.S. EDT CAMP PENDLETON, California (AP) - A Marine Corps helicopter crash off San Diego that killed seven men was caused primarily by crew mistakes while approaching a Navy ship, military officials said Thursday. "The helicopter simply came in too low and too fast," Marine Lt. Col. Carol McBride said in announcing results of an investigation into the Dec. 9 accident. The pilot, Capt. James Lukehart, had more than 1,650 hours of flight time and was not considered a "hot-dog" pilot, according to a 29-page report. Six Marines and a Navy corpsman died and 11 others were rescued after the rear landing gear of their CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter snagged a safety net during a training exercise and plunged into the sea 15 miles off Point Loma.

Seven Marines Killed in Pacific Crash
The seven Marines were from Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego. Some newspaper reports indicate that the CH-46 Sea Knight crashed into the Pacific about fifteen miles south from San Diego. The helicopter on training missions had eleven others on board that survived the crash. The helicopter apparently approached a ship to low and my have caught on part of the ship. After the crash, it sank very fast. This crash has re-ignited the call to eliminate the CH-64's as they are the oldest helicopters used by the Marines.
