man i thought the hummers provided poor protection from small arms fire and rpg's. The LAnd rover defender provides nothing. I hope the british have another vehicle that is properly armoured.

I never saw a jeep that could give protection to a RPG or small arms fire.... Did you?

I count 12 aswell.
Look closely, the one most on the right appears to be a GMPG, in fact it is a shoulderd Minimi.
If Landrovers aren't the coolest vehicles on the planet, then you better not let me see any pics of the vehicle that is cooler. I would pass out. Great pics, very much appreciated.
The LandRover dealer here in Knoxville has a Red 1997 Defender (the US version has a shorter wheelbase - more like a Jeep) for $47K. Too much money but still damned cool.

All nice words on that sites, but I still doubt if they can resist a RPG or even small arms fire...
I know that this vehicle is not protected enough to withstand a direct hit of an RPG, so I strongly doubt if those humvees are....

Both of which have the cross country ability of a sea turtle and about the same speed.

Defenders have always come in three wheelbases 90", 110" and 130" - hence the designations. Most (but not all WOLF's and WIMIK's are 110's).

There have been armoured varients of Land Rovers knocking around for years in one form or another.

i agree with you that no current jeep like vehicle can withstand an RPG hit. The Army was working on a "cage" that went around the humvee but i doubt it will work.
i wonder if they will be able to make a rpg resistant vechle in the near future and if it will still be light and mobile.

the VKP rovers ie the 1/2 tonne Air Portable one shown was only designed to stop shrapnel and wouldn't take direct hits from even high velocity rounds. The Cage system of Kremlin 1&2 armour was applied to Saracen and Pig afv's in the provance in the late 70's/ early 80's remember it well.
Even the snatch vehicles aren't designed to operate in anti tank threat enviroment and the lunatic who is putting troops out in Basrah in them when the threat is high is in need of a serious kicking.

I know it's picky..but there are 12 Gimpies in the pic. Two dismounted and ten on the wagons. Two guns on each Landy - five Landies visible.
The foresight is visible on the distant vehicle.

Seems as though the majority of these vehicles mount the 7.62 gun on top. I'm surprised there aren't more with the .50Cal.

We tend to use Minimis or GPMGs for top cover the .50s are largely kept for war fighting - they cause too much collateral damage when there are civvies about.

is there not also the slight problem of when the .50 is being fired at 90deg to the bonnet of the wimik falling over? As happened to a few from 16aa on telic1.
Nice to see some pics of the Improvisation that had to take place because no one factored in the Iraqis not actually liking us and throwing bricks etc. So storage cages, Chain link fence etc had to be attached to the Rovers to offer troops some protection before snatch was rapidly pulled out of NI to cover. The sugestion was staffed up to Markralon the ambulances to offer some protection. And as the sun a few weeks ago pointed out many troops are on the ground in soft landrovers as there is very limited spares for the Snatch.

any one heard anything about when the G wagon is replacing the landrover. I know that the FFR is having to be replaced by the Pinzgauer due to weigh problems with the Bowman vehicle fit.

The .50 just doesn't look right on a Land Rover, but I'm sure it gets the job done ;)

I have wanted to buy a landrover for years but you can't buy them new in the US :(
No passenger side airbag....... :bash:
Thank goodness the gov't knows what I can and can't handle.
