Hello Guys,

I am planning on going to the range in a few minutes, and just cleaned my Ak fairly nicely. I noticed something that has never caught my attention. I noticed that the rifleing down the bore of the barrel had a seperation (split) about in the handguard area of the barrel. However the rifleing remains streight and true. Meaning there are no changes in level on either side of that split I noticed. Is it possible that this barrel is shot??? Or are aks suppsed to be rifled this way?? Help

I have seen the same on many AKs ...and ones that I have owned.....it looks like it is a cm long or so.....if its what I am thinking of....never have had any issues with mine, but if your concerned about it take to a gunsmith first before firing....again mine had a small split or looked like a crack about a cm long or so....if yours is completely split and running the length of the handguard I would not do anything till you take it to gunsmith

Is it possible that you're looking at the hole thru which gas is diverted to the piston?

Yes this is the case, about mid way through the handguard, but just a cm or so in length as you say. BUt Im going to question a smith to be safe.

That may very well be it as well, but I was certain that that hole was smaller than the spread of the split that I was referring to, and I also thought that the gas port was more towards the front site post. But I may be wrong.

That is my thoughts and as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
