Hitchens is my new hero; finally a new intellectual face for American conservativism.

Hitch is kind of a trotskyite leftist, but one who still believes in the west as the highest development of man and something worth defending even if it is imperfect. He doesn't seem to have had his mind emptied out by postmodernism the way most leftist intellectuals have.

He's the kind of guy where you might argue intensely over domestic social policy, but you'd have common ground on much of the international stuff.

as long as they don't control the State Department or the Pentagon I'm not too worried.

not to say that the media of course isn't important nor the educational system, but that's something that can be changed soon enough. but that's probably just wishful thinking on my part.

well i'd argue that a lot of them are pacifists, so they would naturally be inclined to the left; especially the more senior anti-Vietnam war era professors .

but the notion most left-leaning people like to propagate is the belief that their ideas come about because they are simply "more educated"; people like Hitchens and others certainly do well to counter that stereotype.
