TERRORIST'S CLEMENCY PLEA TURNED DOWN

German President Horst Köhler Rejects Early Release for Christian Klar

Germany's President Horst Köhler has refused clemency to the convicted RAF terrorist Christian Klar.

German President Horst Köhler has refused to grant early release to convicted Red Army Faction terrorist Christian Klar.
Köhler's office announced Monday that the president had turned down Klar's plea for clemency, as well as a similar plea from fellow RAF member Birgit Hogefeld. Both Klar and Hogefeld are serving life sentences for murder.
The 54-year-old Klar has been in prison for 24 years and is two years away from being eligible for parole.

He is serving a life sentence for his role in the murder of German federal prosecutor Siegfried Buback (http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,479478,00.html)and other RAF killings. Klar, who had already had one clemency plea turned down by Köhler's predecessor Johannes Rau, was criticized in February when he sent a provocative anti-capitalist statement to a conference of far-left groups (http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1518,468956,00.html). Critics claimed the statement showed Klar had not changed his radical views.

Hogefeld received a life sentence in 1996 for the murder of an American soldier and a bomb attack on a United States airbase in 1985. She will not be eligible for parole until 2011 at the earliest.
Earlier, conservative politicians had reacted with fury to the news that Köhler had met with Klar as he considered granting him clemency. On Saturday, DER SPIEGEL reported on the meeting between Köhl and Klar.
Although it is a shame that this *** jailed for nine-fold murder can even hope for early release in our country, it's good that Köhler showed strength here and threw down the plea for clemency. This debate lasted long enough now, some politicians even threatened Köhler (only it is not their business to decide about a plea for clemency ) they would torpedo his reelection...

Although the liberalization of the justice system has brought many improvements for every citizen, it also led to some disadvantages, beginning with the assumption that even the most gruesome killer would have a right on reintegration into society.
Klar murdered nine people, but he will be released after serving a 26 year sentence - just because he was convicted a decade too late. Heinrich Pommerenke, who had his trial only twenty years before Klar, killed 4 women and is still imprisoned, since he was convicted before the great justice reform - serving a 156 years sentence till now. That's the way we should continue to deal with people who think they had the morally right to take the lifes of others.

That statement reflects your political opinion. And I disagree. Köhler warned he would be an uncomfortable president if he had to, so I assume he is in political relation "old" enough to make decisions for his own.

What has my political opinion to do with it? Some politicians openly blackmailed not to reelect him. That´s a fact.

The assumption that fact could influenced his decision is an imputation. I am very sure that Köhler is not a statesman who would let others dictate his schedule.
