I saw the thread about the 30,000 young Muslims standing ready to attack government forces in Thailand, and I thought of this...
Is the Islamic movements of today becoming similar to the Communist wave that happened in the 50s-80s? The democratic nations were fearful of Communism spreading throughout the world and tried to stop it, namely the US who fought 2 hot wars and one cold one over it, plus dealing with Cuba. Now I see these radical Islamic movements happening across the world, preaching hate and trying to overthrow certain govt's - is this something that in the future we will have to fight over to control?

Hey!
Your government shipped 5000+ of these Islamic extremists to Bosnia, to fight against my people, who happen to be Christian.
Your government supported them and now the world is paying the price.

Vance. Tihs is one of your most interesting points yet.
I think we will be forced into turning this war into a Democracy vs Islam war. Sadly Islam and democracy are proven to not be able to co-exist. i fear for the future and what it may bring. I hesitate bringing children into this world, thinking as to what the future is going to hold for them.
Sometimes i wish i was born in another time. We are in for tough times. Were going to have to buckle in and take it as we can.
Best luck to you all.

Just like "we" beat out fascism and Stalinism, we shall prevail...capitalism, democracy and freedom -- good. Pin-heads, religious fanatics and terrorists -- bad. It's very simple.

It all comes at a cost. And we will have to ask ourselves how much were willing to spend?
obviously we will win. but like the cold war. it wont come easy.

You are correct, EvanLloyd.
I look at the Brits during the Battle of Britain -- how hopeless did they feel? And look what ended up happening. Same with the Russians during 1941-1942. And things weren't looking too cheery for the Americans after Pearl Harbor.
Good prevails over evil. And if any of you trollers think I mean anything against Islam by this, then please post. I know what is up.
Marshall Plan-style economics sponsored by the US and the UN for the Middle East. Let's develop a middle class, promote women's rights and education. It worked for post-war Europe and Japan -- it'll work for our brothers and sisters in the Middle East.

I doub't it'll work for people in the middle east except the israelis. Muslims have a total different mindset then most other cultures, why do you think they adopt to our culuture and value when they immigrate to europe ?
They are not going to give up their religion in exchange for western ideas, I think it's more likely we'll see the opposite. Meaning more and more fundamentilism.

How are we supposed to create a middle class when the dictators just steal all that aid from the populace and use it to build palaces and arm their armies and militias? From what I've seen, foreign aid rarely reaches the population enough to even provide subsistence, not to mention create a middle class. Look at Somalia, Iraq under Saddam, etc.
The Marshall Plan was different because half of the governments in Western Europe were friendly democracies and we were occupying the other half ;) The governments of Saudi Arabia, Syria, etc aren't exactly like the French post-WWII...so do we have to rely on benevolent occupation (like Germany) for the entire frickin' Arab world? Considering the difficulties we're having with Iraq alone, I don't think that's an option.

The way you post it, it is simple indeed. The real world is a little more complex than that unfortunatly. There is no such thing as a black/white, good/evil, etc. Every good has some evil and every evil has some good.

promoting education in Europe after ww2 is very different than what you want to do. These things were often already there (to some extent, the time is important) before ww2. Marshall help and such did not change society too much in Europe. But those countries are alot different.
