TOM OF FINLAND was born Touko Laaksonen in 1920 in the village of
Kaarina, Finland. At the age of nineteen, he moved to Helsinki to attend art
college and, for his own personal enjoyment, created his first homoerotic
drawings.

Following his release from the army after World War II, Touko began to work
in advertising. He continued to draw his fantasies and, urged by close
friends, submitted them to the American bodybuilding magazine Physique
Pictorial. Because of the conservative social climate in 1957, he chose to be
published under the pseudonym "Tom of Finland."

In 1991, he was featured in the film documentary Daddy and the Muscle
Academy - The Art, Life, and Times of Tom of Finland. Later that year, he
died of complications from emphysema.

rofl I think he's just misunderstood.

I spent 6 weeks in Finland one summer. It was in Keitele (not sure if I spelled that correctly) However, I refused the sauna... cause they were all naked, and they had a 17 year old son. I was 18 at the time, and I wasn't really comfortable with that situation! :oops:

I don't remember exactly where it was, but I rode a ship from Sweden to Finland (Silja Line... now THAT was fun) and we went north from Helsinki. It seems like it was at least a couple of hours north, but it's been a long time ago.

epos of Finland, that tells the story of how the world was created, and which Gods and

Gay nazi - A contradiction in terms?

The British National Party is awash with rumours that a leading member of the party is a closet bisexual. The thought of gay nazis may seem contradictory, but over the years several leading nazis have led secret, and not so secret, gay lives. Nick Lowles and Kate Taylor explore the apparent contradiction and ask whether one can ever reconcile being gay and a nazi?

"After roll call on the evening of June 20, 1942, an order was suddenly given: 'All prisoners with the pink triangle will remain standing at attention!' We stood on the desolate, broad square, and from somewhere a warm breeze carried the sweet fragrance of resin and wood from the regions of freedom; but we couldn't taste it, because our throats were hot and dry from fear. Then the guardhouse door of the command tower opened, and an SS officer and some of his lackeys strode towards us. Our detail commander barked: 'Three hundred criminal deviants, present as ordered!' We were registered, and then it was revealed to us in accordance with an order from the Reichsführung SS, our category was to be isolated in an intensified-penalty company, and we would be transferred as a unit to the Klinker Brickworks the next morning. The Klinker factory! We shuddered, for the human death mill was more than feared."

L D Classen von Neudegg was one of the thousands of gay men rounded up by the Nazis before and during the Second World War. While he survived to tell his story, thousands of others were not so lucky.

Homosexuality was illegal under Hitler's Germany. With the introduction of the Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honour, in 1935, a kiss, an embrace and even homosexual fantasies were punishable. According to James Steakley in The Body Politic, "one man was successfully prosecuted on the grounds that he had observed a couple making love in a park and watched only the man".

The homophobia of Nazism did not end in 1945 and it remains a cornerstone of far-right politics. Unsurprisingly, the British National Party's policy is to outlaw homosexuality. "We are pledged not only to put an end to this promotion by means of invoking obscenity laws; we promise, in addition, to bring back legislation forbidding homosexual acts - thus driving these revolting practices back into the closet where they belong." (BNP General Election manifesto 1997)

In recent years nazis have revelled in the Aids virus. As the BNP wrote gleefully in 1983: "Nature is at last taking revenge against the nauseating proliferation of homosexuality". (Spearhead no 111, July 1983)

Even after the recent nazi bombing in Soho, the BNP could not resist an anti-gay attack. "The TV footage of dozens of 'gay' demonstrators flaunting their perversion in front of the world's journalists showed just why so many ordinary people find these creatures so repulsive." (Nick Griffin, Spearhead, June 1999, p364)

At a more extreme end, violence has been perpetrated by nazi thugs, largely but not exclusively drawn from the ranks of the skinheads. In 1990 Combat 18's present leader, Will Browning, was sent to prison for three years after attacking a gay man in central London. In Sweden several members of the nazi Aryan Brotherhood have been imprisoned for murdering gay men.

Underpinning fascist hatred of gays is an underlying ideology relating to traditional roles within the family. This is complimented by continued emphasis on a strong moral order. Consequently there is often a need for open displays of both strong masculinity and heterosexuality. The anti-gay rhetoric and practice that pervades the extreme right derives from a belief in the recreation of the white race and a rigid gender system that accompanies this.

In essence, a man must "be a man". Any roles that do not fit into this rigid model of masculinity, or into what is considered a normal and healthy sexuality, are virulently opposed. This can culminate not only in overt abuse but also in physical violence.

However, despite the long-standing homophobia of the far right, there have been a number of examples of gay nazis. The most famous in the Third Reich was Ernst Roehm, leader of the street thugs, the Stormtroopers. He eventually fell victim to Hitler in the "Night of the Long Knives", which Hitler liked people to believe, quite untruthfully really, was a purge of homosexuals in the Nazi Party.

In Britain the best known gay nazi was Martin Webster, the national organiser of the National Front during the seventies. He was eventually "outed" by John Tyndall, the BNP leader, citing this as his reason for splitting from the NF in 1980. In Germany at least two postwar nazi leaders, Michael Kühnen and Ewald Althans, have led secret gay lives.

Few of these people were ever open about their sexuality, indeed attitudes ranged from being in the closet to outright denial. One exception was Peter Marriner, one of the only "out" gay nazis since the war. Of course he was to suffer and was gradually ostracised by much of the far right.

As recently as the mid-nineties, Marriner addressed a meeting of the West Midlands BNP. "What's your view on homosexuality?" one member asked sarcastically. In a rare piece of wit for the far right, Marriner responded: "I don't think it should be made compulsory."

Another now infamous gay nazi was Nicky Crane, a member of the British Movement Leader Guard and a skinhead leader in the early eighties. At over six foot tall and extremely violent, Crane was the archetypal nazi skinhead, so much so that it was his picture that adorned the cover of "Strength Through Oi", a seminal "Oi" album. As a nazi Crane was involved in much violence, including gay bashing. Yet at the same time, and presumably unbeknown to those close to him in the nazi scene, he was a hardcore gay porn star. His long-time partner was an older Jewish man.

Crane finally came out on a Channel 4 programme in September 1992, claiming that since coming to terms with his sexuality he had dropped out of the right. The following year he died of Aids.

That so many leading nazis have been gay begs the question, why? "There is no one simple answer but a multitude of reasons," says Peter Tatchell of the gay rights group, Outrage.

For a gay man to espouse homophobic views, and sometimes even to perpetrate violence against other gay men, hints at a self-effacing hatred. To hit out at something they do not like about themselves indicates a fear of who they truly are. A web of violence, explicit heterosexuality and strong masculinity lies under the umbrella of far-right groups. This may well provide a successful mask for those wanting to avoid the implications of being gay in a hostile environment.

Self-denial is another reason why gay men seek refuge in the far right. "The fear of being labelled 'queer' can be part of the reason some heterosexual men go to extremes," says Tatchell. "Their hyper-masculinity is projected as 'proof' of hetero identity. It ostentatiously dissociates them from the perceived effeminacy of the homosexual 'other'. These insecure straights reassure themselves of their heterosexuality with the simple-minded syllogism: 'Straight men are tough. Queers are weak. I'm tough therefore I can't be queer'."

Attempting to explain why some gay men become involved in 'queer' bashing and violence generally, Tatchell adds: "Unable to accept their homosexuality, their participation in violence can be a desperate attempt to fit in with their straight peers, prove their 'manhood' and project a 'tough guy' image to deflect speculation about their sexuality".

But the paradox of the gay nazi may also be explained in another way. Generally condemned by a society that continues to be largely hostile to gays, some men may find refuge and a new power status in the far right. Through adherence to the politics espoused by fascist groups, a new identity emerges - one which is empowered by positively identifying with the status of white male. While in this hostile environment a gay identity may be disempowering, a new role can be found which counteracts this. For in this context a stereotyped version of masculinity can be adhered to. This is a macho, aggressive version that is seemingly incompatible with homosexuality, thus rendering this part of their identity invisible.

As one former gay nazi who hid his sexuality told Searchlight: "As a gay man I was criminalised by society. I began mixing with other 'outcasts'. I got drawn towards the right because it gave me a sense of power I didn't have, or at least wasn't afforded to me by society."

Of course some gay men may simply enjoy the iconography of the nazis. Uniforms, power, domination, skinheads and the general machismo could be appealing to some gay men. "You must remember it is a very male movement," says Tatchell. "Some people will be drawn to the male fraternity that exists in the right."

Finally there are some gay nazis, Webster the obvious example, who simply dismiss the association between one's sexuality and one's political views. However, he might convince himself of that, but the incompatibility between homosexuality and national socialism is clear. While Webster might be right when he argues that he has never made a homophobic remark, he presided over a homophobic organisation, some of whose members carried out verbal and physical attacks on gay men.

The hypocrisy is not confined to those gay nazis who are involved in homophobic movements. Hitler was well aware of Roehm's sexuality, just as Tyndall knew of Webster's long-term relationship with Michael Salt. In both cases their own political hatred of homosexuality was suppressed until, as happened in both cases, it became politically advantageous to "out" their colleagues.

There is no logic behind being a gay nazi. It is a contradiction, an incomprehensible position. That´s an intereting thread. And I thought that the off topic section was boring compared with the photo section!
