AFAIK it is after the battle of Olszynka Grochowska where polish grenadier who lost his 2 fingers was saluting general who was visiting lines (i think it was gen. Bem but i wont bet)

BTW. Today is one of the most important polish national holidays - The 3 May Constitution Holiday - it was second constitution in the world after USA constitution.

The four cornered Polish "rogatywka" actually dates back to the 18th century. The Polish word for corner is róg - from where the term rogatywka is derived. It's use by the Poles in many military campaigns over the next two centuries has made this a distinctively Polish style.

After 1945 the use of the rogatywka as a standard officer hat style in the Polish Army was all but discontinued (it did see very limited ceremonial usage, and was retained in the field cap design). With the rebirth of a free Poland after the departure of the Soviet occupiers 14 years ago the rogatywka has once again been reinstated to its former place in Polish military attire.

AFAIK it is after the battle of Olszynka Grochowska where polish grenadier who lost his 2 fingers was saluting general who was visiting lines (i think it was gen. Bem but i wont bet)

In one of Szymon Kobylinski's books I read that two fingers mean "honor & fatherland", and such way of saluting was invented during one of the uprisings.
Never heard about the grenadier, but probably it's true.

I wonder when this powder keg will blow up. :| There is still a north-south conflict, a christian-muslim conflict and numerous ethnic conflicts. Then you have the fact that democracy is no moe than a facade in nigeria. And in addition there is heavy poverty (90% live under the poverty line).

So a lot of things which could trigger a big crisis. :|

It's not shako, it's rogatywka. Shako is a high, round cap worn by Napoleonic soldiers.

Yoy're saying that it looks ugly, and I'm saying that it looks great ;) :P
It's used by Polish army since early XIXth century. Rogatywka is original, and we (at least I :D) are proud that our soldiers are recognizable, they don't look like everybody else :D

Yes they are. We are still a constitutional monarchy and the queen is considered "Queen of Canada". All Members of the armed services still swear an oath to the crown upon entering the military.

We are still a constitutional monarchy and the queen is considered "Queen of Canada". All Members of the armed services still swear an oath to the crown upon entering the military.

God Save The Queen!
My apologies.

ID this gun! :D9mm MGP-79A submachinegun, own Peruvian model.

http://www.wapahani.com/imageOPA.JPG

The MGP-79A was designed at the behest of the Peruvian Navy in 1979 who needed a new weapon for operations at sea. The design is a conventional blowback model which uses a perforated barrel jacket to cool the weapon after repeated firing. The design was a popular one and was in service well into the late 1980's when it was utlimately replaced. The barrel jacket can be removed to allow a suppressor to be affixed to the weapon.

I know that it's tradition...but why not choosing 18th or 19th century tradition...looks more cool than early 20th century or Warzaw uprising uniforms! ;)
well polish uniform for me looks like synonym of bravery and honour. they realy look good.
and 18-19th cent poland was in ocupation that times so in that thimes was so meany uniforms it would be hard to decide what to wear. Good idea would be horse unit in husaria equipment, they look just perfect. we arent nation of infantry, we were use to nation of cavalery. now we have air cav. and panzer cav. units :)
but i realy would want to saw someday big parade starting from slavic woriors medival knights, hussaria polish-hungarian infantry and so on until the newest time :-)

Salvadoran troops have demonstrated courage in two incidents. In one, they saved the main US administrator in Najaf. The US wants to give them the Bronze Star

One of his friends was dead, another 12 lay wounded, and the four soldiers were still fighting, surrounded and running out of ammunition.

Cpl. Samuel Toloza said a prayer, opened up his knife, and charged the Iraqi insurgents.

In one of the few cases of hand to hand combat in the Iraqi conflict, Toloza stabbed a few insurgents that had encircled one of his buddies.

The surprised insurgents retreated immediately, just as another column was reaching the hospital to rescue to Salvadorans.

In another incident, Salvadoran soldiers saved the life of Phil Kosnett, who is the highest member of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Najaf. Kosnett has proposed that six members of the Cuscatlan battalion that defended him receive the Bronze star.

“We never thought about giving up, I was trained to fight until the end” say Toloza, one of 380 Salvadoran soldiers.

On April 4, followers of the Shiite cleric al-Sadr took control of the city and attacked the bases Baker, salvadorena and Golf.

When Toloza and 16 other Salvadoran soldiers came that morning to the Iraqi post, some 2 km from their base, they saw that the 350 Iraqi police had deserted it, and saw themselves surrounded by insurgents from the al-Mahdi.

The man in charge of the platoon, teniente coronel (???) Francisco Flores, said his men did not fire for half an hour, for fear of hitting civilians, even though 10 of his men had been hit by enemy fire that involved grenades and machine gun fire.

After a few hours of fighting, the Salvadorans were left without ammunition and the soldier Natividad Mendez, a friend of Toloza for the past 3 years, was dead on the floor after being hit twice, most probably by sniper fire.

“I thought this is it. I asked God to protect us, and I was saved” Toloza said.

The wounded were put on a vehicle and Toloza and three other soldiers tried to get to their base. But they soon met with al-Sadr combatants. A dozen of them tried to capture one of the Salvadorans.

“My immediate reaction was that I had to defend my friend, and the only thing I had was a knife”, said Toloza, who charged the attackers.

Sorry, but I disagree. Macedonians were of course greeks, although the snobs of Athens could look at them wrinkling the eye brow because they were considered a bunch of rude rednecks, but macedonians were of greek race, greek language(only different dialect) and most important, of greek culture, and talking of military, they fought like greeks, the falanges of macedonians only were more elaborated units of greeks infrantry, the hoplitas. I think after being educated by Aristoteles you must have at least a bit of Greece on you.
The actual Republic of Macedonia, former Yugoslavia, is populated by slavs people, and even it isn´t all the former Macedonia territory of Filipo´s age, there´s still a portion of former Macedonia in Greece.

They are also trialing C9's with telescopic butts and shorter barrels, which will eventually become C9A2's. (See pics below)
