Not to denigrate anyone, but most (if not all) of the brit shots are Company Sharpshooters, not snipers...

Just my HO, judged by dress, kit and disposition.

Isn't that an M21 in the last picture? Perhaps you are asking if anyone got shot with the M21?

i think scissors are best for snipping, while i would think the .50 cal would be best for sniping and such...u wierdo

I must disagree with you about the .50 cal being the best sniper rifle. Its good at what it's ment for, yes, but it's not an anti personal weapon. It's bulky, heavy, hard to manuever, and would jsut suck to have to carry one of those around in 100+ degree weather. I would rather get shot by it than having to carry it around ;)

Looks like an M14. but since it was disbanded it probably M21.

Overall, great pictures. Snipers are very important in that kind of conflicts.

What sniper rifle does the British have in service?

M82A1 (Barrett Light .50) (used by SF & EOD)
L96 A1 & A2 (basically the Accuracy International AW) (Standard sniper rifle)
L115A1 LRR (.338 Long Range Rifle, used by sharpshooters) (almost identical to the L96, except for the caliber).

Most of the L96's shown are probably L115's as most of the Brits shown are sharpshooters not snipers...

jsniper
10-14-2003, 12:15 PM
The picture is not showing a L96. It is a M-14 or a D.M.R.. They are Navy or Airforce guys. The new juiced up M-14's are called Designated Marksmen Rifle's. You have to look at the equipment. Some one holding a L96 would not have a partner with a U.S. made m-4. And the Brits use what is called the Artic warior, or the just call it an A.I. after the company name. Acuracy International. It is in my experiance the best all around sniper rifle in the market. They come in 7.62, 338, 50. cal.

Royal
10-15-2003, 06:26 AM
The AW is not the same as the L96. It is a for export version based on the original concept. There are a number of differences and (IMHO) it is a better sniper weapon.

DP.UK
10-15-2003, 11:10 AM
The L96 is also made in .243Win for UK Law enforcement, using 100 gr Hi-Shok Lapua. Also used are 7.62 fully moderated L96's fitted with Kite4's or Sopelem's. Both are well equipped rifles.

Royal, you may be able to answer this one? why did so many teams (RM) opt for .50 cal Barratts rather than .338 AW's during Telic and Jacana?. I understand the demand for .50 cals was greater than the stores ability to acquire - locate them...

In a word, range...

But to expand a bit,

L115's are still coming on line, as with the Minimi they were being issued to units in theatre.

The M82 on the other hand has been on the inventory for years, there were quite a few sitting in Royal Engineer and Royal Navy (the Tupperware Navy have tried them for disrupting sea mines brought up by CD's and ROV's) stores

DPGLAW the reason for the typos is because most posters type casually and don't treat it as an english exam.

Inferno I've seen some of snipers hiding but I can't remember where should be too hard to find though, if you do find some on military sights post them.
