They use this to dismantle uxo's from a safe distance, this may be bomblets, artillery projectiles ect.

Actually, the "back blast" goes out towards the sides due to the shape of the flash suppressor. If anyone should have that vest on its the spotter. Or at least that's Barrett's take on it.
