LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - The Rev. Jerry Falwell, who founded the Moral Majority and built the religious right into a political force, died Tuesday shortly after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University, a school executive said. He was 73.
Ron Godwin, the university's executive vice president, said Falwell, 73, was found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. "CPR efforts were unsuccessful," he said.
Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but he said Falwell "has a history of heart challenges."
"I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast," Godwin said. "He went to his office, I went to mine, and they found him unresponsive."

AIDS is not just God's punishment for homo******s; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homo******s.

God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.
-- Rev Jerry Falwell, blaming civil libertarians, feminists, homo******s, and abortion rights supporters for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, to which Rev Pat Robertson agreed, quoted from John F Harris, "God Gave US 'What We Deserve,' Falwell Says," The Washington Post (September 14, 2001)
Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan.

I won't celebrate his death or anything, but I'm really not at all feeling sad or contemplative about this. Usually when a prominent figure dies I automatically try to remember as much as I can about the person and his/her work. In Fallwell's case all I can think of is that he was one of the craftiest hustlers and scam artists we've known in the States, and not at all beneficial to anyone but himself.

If you are intolerant of intolerant people, you are being intolerant.
If you hate all intolerant people, you are intolerant, and you must therefore hate yourself.
Or, you could just do as I do and accept that intolerance is not always bad. For example, our society being intolerant of armed robbery is a good thing.

This isn't about being intolerant of crime. It is about being intolerant of ****bags like Falwell, Bakker, and Swaggert using religion as a tool to preach hate and intolerance of others, because of how some people live their lives (while not harming anyone else). The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this.
-- Rev Jerry Falwell, blaming civil libertarians for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, to which Rev Pat Robertson again agreed, quoted from AANEWS #958 by American Atheists (September 14, 2001)
And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, "You helped this happen."

I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!
-- Rev Jerry Falwell, America Can Be Saved, 1979 pp. 52-53, from Albert J Menendez and Edd Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom
The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.
-- Rev Jerry Falwell, Sermon, July 4, 1976
The Jews are returning to their land of unbelief. They are spiritually blind and desperately in need of their Messiah and Savior.
-- Jerry Falwell, Listen, America!
I do not believe the homo****** community deserves minority status. One's misbehavior does not qualify him or her for minority status. Blacks, Hispanics, women, etc., are God-ordained minorities who do indeed deserve minority status.

About the flags at half staff (in the USA) : Today was the National Day of Rememberance for all police men and women who were killed or were disabled while in the line of duty. That is why all flags were at half staff today.
Thank goodness.
And I didn't know that. I raise a toast (non-alcoholic of course) to them.

He preached, "Jesus is the way the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the father but by him." Not go out and kill innocent civilians and you will get 72 virgins in paradise....thats a little different.
yeah, so quotes like these arent hateful right... theyre factual. i cant believe we are dealing with this kind of stupidity in the 21st century.
You'll be riding along in an automobile. You'll be the driver perhaps. You're a Christian. There'll be several people in the automobile with you, maybe someone who is not a Christian. When the trumpet sounds you and the other born-again believers in that automobile will be instantly caught away -- you will disappear, leaving behind only your clothes and physical things that cannot inherit eternal life. That unsaved person or persons in the automobile will suddenly be startled to find the car suddenly somewhere crashes.... Other cars on the highway driven by believers will suddenly be out of control and stark pandemonium will occur on ... every highway in the world where Christians are caught away from the drivers wheel.

Apparently Falwell was too left-wing for Fred Phelps:

"Jimmy Cater's message of peace and reconciliation under almost all circumstances is simply incompatible with Christian teachings as I interpret them. This 'turn the other cheek' business is all well and good but it's not what Jesus fought and died for. What we need to do is take the battle to the Muslim heathens and do unto them before they do unto us."
In a radio interview on March 4, 2002, Falwell said of former President Jimmy Carter (who I think is also a tool)
(BTW: Turn the other cheek was exactly what Christ died for)
"I think Muhammad was a terrorist. I read enough by both Muslims and non-Muslims, [to decide] that he was a violent man, a man of war."
An interview given on September 30, 2002, for the October 6 edition of 60 Minutes.
(Yes, possibly a man of war, but a terrorist?)
"The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country." (Sermon, July 4, 1976)
"I do question the sincerity and non-violent intentions of some civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mr. James Farmer, and others, who are known to have left-wing associations."
A Testament of Hope: the essential writings of Martin Luther King
"The Jews are returning to their land of unbelief. They are spiritually blind and desperately in need of their Messiah and Savior."

Well he was ever so slightly hypocritical in his own views, he formed something of an alliance with ultra right wing Jewish organisations demanding that the Jewish state not give any land to the Palistinians or have a peace deal, even if it meant continual war, of coure that was for his own reasons, Isreal has to be in it's historical entirety for the second coming, guess what happens then...yes the Jews all die, but thats cool Jesus will be back in the house and thats all that matters
...he was a twisted weasley old douchbag, he wasn't a spiritual man, he was a religious one, there is a diffrence, the good spiritual people are out there busting their ass's caring for the poor feeding the hungry, and saving the sick, he was riding around in private jets and living in a mansion, God has a special place for people like that

I don't think he was anti-semitic. In fact, he is quoted as saying he believes the Jews are the chosen people of God. Obviously there is some contradiction with what was posted above though, so who knows.
However, he was still about every other damn thing he is said to have been in this thread.
As far as I can tell he was just a religious guy who stuck to the teachings of the bible as he interpretted it.
He was anti-gay because the bible is anti-gay, etc.
I don't fault him for that. I actually expect someone who goes by the name of reverend to stick with his religious beliefs no matter what the society around him believes. That's what religion is all about.

And there is the rub, isn't it? We expect all religious people to follow their teachings of their chosen faith. Yet, politicians who are Catholic endorse abortion legislation...Christian Pastors endorse homo******ity and same *** marriages. What is the point of "pick and choose" dogma? It really is oxymoronic to ascribe to a belief system and then discard elements of that belief system you disagree with...and yet continue to claim adherence to it...that's being a 65% Christian or a 35% Jew or a 25% Muslim. It has been said, there is no such thing a little bit pregnant...it is either all the way or nothing....and that is why I have never found a single religion I can belong to. I formed my onw church and my own faith so I can at last be true to something I believe in. I would rather be an athiest than a hypocrit. But, I can not be an athiest since I believe in a Supreme being...:)
Jerry was, by my standards, a hypocrit...but, not more or less than any other relious leader who ever lived...and I add this qualifyer...that I know of. Perhaps St. Francis of Assisi was the least hypocritical. Perhaps some primitive Shamen were true to their spirit..who knows. But, politics and religion never mix well..Jesus knew this and made His famous "Give to Caesar that which belongs to Caesar and give to God that which is God's." speech... Thus setting the standard for all time to follow.
Falwell would have done much better to have heeded those teachings.

You believe as you like, but I'll stand by what I believe, Politicians hear God saying what they want him/her/it to say...unless they have a red phone to the big man, any thing they say in Gods name to be done is their own...and no I'm not talkng about GWB, we have our own here too, just me, up untill the 70's here, the Church and leaders of the church could pretty much dictate Government policy.
