Vandals have daubed swastikas on graves at a Christian cemetery in eastern France, two days after a similar incident at a nearby Jewish cemetery.

Tombstones were found desecrated at Niederhaslach cemetery in Alsace, near the German border, on Sunday.

On Friday, swastikas and anti-Semitic graffiti were discovered at a Jewish cemetery in Herrlisheim.

The French government has strongly condemned the desecrations. It is unclear who is responsible.

France has suffered a wave of anti-Semitic violence coinciding with renewed fighting in the Middle East.

Many of the attacks have been blamed on young Muslims - although it is unclear who is behind the cemetery incidents in Alsace.

The local Council of the Muslim Faith has called for those responsible to be punished "with then utmost severity".

On Monday, French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin reaffirmed his "firm condemnation of all racist or anti-Semitic attacks".

He spoke after meeting the head of the French Council of the Muslim Faith, Dalil Boubakeur, in Paris.

With the recent upsurge in anti-semitism (and now anti-christian) burning of jewish schools and synagoges... Haiw, do you still doubt this is the work of muslims?

It could be any number of people, could have been neo-Nazi's, moronic children (adults would not have been a proper word), anti-semite's, etc etc.. It is like the Oklahoma City bombing, when it happened automatically everyone assumed, blamed, and sought out Muslims. It is very sad. Hitler wasn't too much into occultism, you probably confuse him with Himmler. By the way most leading Nazis were conservatie catholics, although the nazis were always suspicious about church and religon and tried to replace it with their ideology.

Swastikas were widely painted and used before christianism in many places of Europe, what Hitler did was getting an old sign for his own purpouses that weren´t religious. In fact, you can find many swasticas together with other similar signs like trisqueles(I don´t know the english word, but it´s similar only that with 3 arms) that were painted and engraved in rocks in basque country by my people thousands of years ago, and the celtics, that came to west europe many time after the basques being here, they too painted swastikas and trisqueles. And regarding this cemeteries profanated, they can be both muslims and neonazis, I think it´s not good talking before having any serious proof.
