Well, the Magpul weapon that has earned much interest has finally been seen throughout the internet (but currently only on a couple of sites)!

Thanks for posting this. If there is a need for a compact weapon for the military this seems to be a good option. Really clever of them to use the 5.56 round. They really seem to have their heads screwed on right at that company.

That does look really great. Only downside I can see with it is the fact it's a bullpup weapon. (No, I do not hate bullpup style weapons, but as I have been told numerous times, the Military does)

Still, Magpul is definitely moving ahead with it's thinking. I hope they can come up with more great ideas like this, and their other kit.

I wonder if it's unbalanced in the weight distribution department.

For some reason I just can't stop thinking that's what the offspring of a P90 and a TAR-21 would look like.

Great weapon. This almost pushes it more to a 5.56mm carbine than a PDW. With a range of about 300m and weighing around 1.8kg this could make a fantastic urban combat, close quarters weapon. With today's mobile troops, either in personnel carriers, helicopters, trucks, jeeps...etc. it is actually more practicle to have a smaller, lighter weapon. Most small arms combat occurs at ranges of 300m or less so why take a longer, heavier weapon when something like this would work 90% of the time, especially with the growing urban combat scenarios of the modern battlefield where firefights happen at short ranges. Add a grenade launcher to a few of them, one sharpshooter with a 7.62mm weapon (for those rare longer range shots) and one 7.62mm GPMG and that would make for a very effective squad.

No way dude. There is definitely a need for a small, easy-to-use PDW that packs more punch than a 9mm pistol, and that doesn't complicate the supply chain with an esoteric cartridge type.

But to say that you should re-equip entire infantry sections with this type of weapon is ludicrous. The US Army, and others, have learnt at their expense that even the M4 Carbine is too weak for use in the open desert or high mountains. As they've seen in Afghanistan. Which is why so many M14s have been brought out of moth-balls and reissued. And why they're now looking at alternative cartridges such as the 6.8mm SPC and 6.5mm Grendel.

Well, the topic is about very short carbines, so take a look, at Czech project of the 5,56 mm x 45 MOR Personal Defence Weapon. I took the picture at the IDET 2007 fairs, Brno, Czech Republic. It is folded - FOLDED! (not only a stock but the whole weapon) - compact assault rifle, designed by Prototypa Brno, and will be developed by CZUB (prototypes, full scale production).

Now that is awesome!

Well, we all now know that Belgium, the Czech Republic, the US, and Germany have their popular PDW's (I am probably missing a bunch).

What about Britain or Russia or other European countries?

I believe it was a UK company that is developing the .224BOZ round, which is a 10mm Auto case necked down to accept a 5.56mm bullet. I've heard they have made a prototype with H&K based off the MP5/10, and rebarrelled Glocks and Colt Delta handguns for testing purposes.

If you want to know what's out there calling itself PDW or being related to this breed of guns ... http://www.personaldefenceweapons.com//index.htm
