From what I've heard there is legislation saying a reservist cannot be fired when on deployment. Also U.S. employers are way more patriotic and understanding of their military than our employers here in Canada so some even give huge amounts of money to the family to keep them going while their father/husband is deployed. That's just mainly because a larger segment of the U.S. population has served in the military. Here in the north we don't have that legislation yet. But it is on the drawing board. For now we've got the CFLC (Canadian Forces Liason Council) which deals with employers of reservists to get them job security or compensation. They even take a civie employer out to the range and let them fire a C-7 or C-9 or whatnot to give them an understanding of what the army does. It's sorta sad actually cause there's an ammo shortage in the CF right now and a civie employer has fired more rounds than me, who's in the infantry. this training year. Also that we have to educate them as to what the hell we do is sad in itself.

Reservists in the US can't be fired, they have their position held for them. I think that they also get comparable pay increases if the whole area where they work gets a raise or if they were scheduled to get a raise.
They don't get any pay while deployed. But some cop buddies of mine got some money from their department, b/c Army pays a lot less.
There is also the Soldiers and Sailors civil relief act which lowers the interest rate on anything you pay interes on (credit cards, loans etc.) 6% Which is pretty good considering some credit cards have 18% interest rates.
There may be some other little extras here and there but those are the main ones.
All best.

hmmm...looks like a potential case of the 'Brandon Funks'
"I signed up for reserve duty, because I wanted to impress people (chicks) with my uniform and be a badass patriot" "They said I'd only be called up one weekend a month or if I was needed for an emergency"....
Guess what: You're needed. Shut the F**K up and reload.

My dad has a co-worker who's son is a marine reservist (23rd Infantry). He got called up one day and was told "Pack your gear. You leave in 3 days and you might be gone for a while..."
He was deployed for 11 months to the Gulf. In my book, that's a little more than "one weekend a month and two weeks a year."

Yes it is, but they have to understand that when you sign up, it's something that can happen.
It may not sound like it, but I have the utmost respect and sympathy for those who have been deployed for an extended period. They've earned it.
I don't think they had any idea that they'd be facing the following:

11 months is to long for anyone to be deployed, the USAF is big enough to have rotations. They'd be just burning their diggers out!
