I guess its for use in the likes of savanna grasslands like you see in Africa, especially during rainy season where trees are quite rare.

or for use in the desert :cantbeli:like iraq during the winter when it's wet and drizzly, rainy, and cold as a bastard. the marines took away all our cold weather gear and replaced them with gortex and fleece. what a crock. apparently you can also use desert marpat in urban enviornments too?
