Greek Special Forces and Riot Police in action - this week

First set of pics were shot during the raid on a ship containing 700 tons of explosives. Operators are Special Forces - Hellenic Coast Guard.

Second set was taken during the riots on June 21st, in Thessaloniki, when the EU Summit took place in that city.

In some of the pics, some of the protestors have something wrapped around their arm. Is that used as some sort of blocking device to the police batons. May seem like a stupid question.

I think they use casts (like when you have broken your arm) for protection. Although I'm not sure.

The guy in the last pic is definitly not dumb. I think that pic is great...hes prolly saying in his head " Come Get Some You...and some words that cant be posted. Those lil protective stuff is for dogs and batons, but they arent gonna do much. Notice pic 7 and 11 the cop behind the other cop tripping the guy, see that metal thingy with the blue handle, is that what they are using to disperse tear gas?

Hellenic Police shoulder patch

For the case of Greece the anti-riots forces are known as MAT forces, which is a the greek abbreviation of:

"Monades Apokatastasis Taksis (MAT, in Greek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_language): Μονάδες Αποκατάστασης Τάξης, usually translated as Greek riot police but actual meaning being Units for the Reinstatement of (Public) Order)".

Nowdays though the term has been replaced and there are two main anti-riot units:



YAT (Υποδιεύθυνση Αποκατάστασης Τάξεως - Subdepartment for the Reinstatement of Order, ex-ΜΑΤ). Main anti-riot unit organised in platoons. Their equipment is streamlined with khaki-green uniforms, knee pads, etc. (see pics for more).



YMET (Υποδιεύθυνση Μέτρων Τάξεως - Subdepartment for Οrder measures). Lately they can fufill duties like YAT's (reinstatement of order), but the difference they can act as platoon forces or smaller and take measures for order. Their uniforms are blue (although I recall seeing some with khaki-green), and have similar equipment with YAT.


Secondarily two other units can be employed during riots:



ΟΠΚΕ (Ομάδα Πρόληψης και Καταστολής Εγκλήματος - Τeam for Prevention and Repression of Crime).



EKAM (Ειδική Κατασταλτική Αντιτρομοκρατική Μονάδα - Special Repressive Counterterrorist Unit). The later has seen action in the last rioting of December, when there was a clear but present danger of protracted national instability.

Ιt is worth noting that both YAT's and YMET's unit emblems have a great historical significane, since they represent the Vergina Sun (http://history-of-macedonia.com/wordpress/2008/04/10/sun-of-vergina-a-greek-symbol/). A symbol of a great Hellenic civlisation, the ancient-greek Kingdom of Macedonia.

These men are really dedicated and they don't tend to receive the proper recognition from public in general. I've heard it is the same for many countries.

That's an incorrect conclusion though!

Greece is known to be a very beautiful, democratic and stable country. What you see here is a small minority of mainly lefty and anarchist idiots rioting against Freedom and Democracy, in mostly heavily urbanised areas (Athens or Thessaloniki). I mean France is an extremely beautiful and nice country, irrespectively of the images we all saw during the famous Paris suburb riots, etc.

I know the Police has in its invertory some weapons capable of shooting plastic bullets since the '80s but I am not sure of which kind. In the EU summit of 2003 they were issued to YAT teams.

More recently the Police has acquired special grenades that can scatter plastic fragments.

I have seen the video and the incident, those people going through the lines of YAT, it is true but they got a permit for protest which the anarchists tried to break. At that moment the police's role was to chase the anarchists. Now if during that a couple of righ-wingers baring greek flags chased the anarchists as well, it is ideally not good, but given the realities in our politics, etc. it is not a problem.

Protests are going on for 13-15 days continuously, but they are peaceful demonstrations in which participate hundreds of thousands (literally) of people from any political background, social class, education, age or ***. Unfortunately - as it is common in many cases - on Wednesday, which was a day of general strike for the workers and their unions, extreme-leftist/anarchist groups infiltrated the workers and clashed with the Police. A few hundred people caused havoc in down-town.

It seems unbelievable what kind of bonuses people were getting paid, eg. 290€ monthly bonus for messengers of different Greek ministries for carrying papers (umm... it's like their job?), bonuses for people working in offices if they are able to use photocopiers or computers etc?

And that is why I don't blame all Greeks. I know, that there are honest and hard working people. But let's make it clear - Greek political and economical system was a huge failure and for many years Greek society didn't want to change that. That is the problem.
I wish you all the best, because as a Pole I know what word "crisis" means, but sorry guys - you wanted that. Or maybe you didn't want, but also didn't do anything to stop disaster.
We had similar situation in begin of 90's and time were really hard then. But we managed to cure of country, because we understood that there is no other way. Painful reforms or disaster. And yes - we had riots too. Farmers were blocking roads, miners were setting cars on fire etc. But now all is OK and I hope that you will go through this like we did.

In the US we have City, County, State and then the Feds. I've been applying to cities to be a police officer, I finished my training last year and its been a pain looking for work. At my churches festival I brought a navy blue Greek Police T-shirt, with Greek writing on the back and it has patches on the arms. It looks like the shirt the police are wearing in the pictures, they guy at church told me not to wear it in Greece, and he said I would get in trouble. Ha Ha.
